Is a cell phone a good birthday gift for a girlfriend?

So, my girlfriend doesn't have a cell phone, but she could really use one. Her birthday is next week. I bought her a cell phone today. Think that's a decent gift?

BTW, this isn't some cutesy romantic gift that I'm trying to win her heart with. We've been together 3 and a half years and live together. I wanted to give her something she'd like that would be useful and also get a positive "hey, cool!" kinda response when she opened it.

Just don't give it to her and go "Now I'll always know where you are", that usually messed everything up. But you've been together for over 3 years and live together so I doubt it will really change anything...

Yup, they've been together for 3.5 Years and she's gonna break up with him now just so she can make free calls...

Do you have a cell phone yourself?

If so, damn, be prepared to get lots of phone calls. ;):p

If we were to break up, the cell phone bill would be the least of our worries. We share a lease on an apartment, we share our furniture, etc.

I'll be seein' ya on Judge Judy....

EDIT: LOL....sorry, didn't read the prior replies confirming this. Seriously....that's NOT a good gift to give a girl. Stay away from the other no-nos too. Never get clothes or shoes without her EXPLICIT permission.

Humm... I would be careful on this one. Great gift, but be sure she doesn't "take you to the bank".

I got my mom a cell phone a couple years ago. I paid the basic charge per month up front for a year. Anything above that was her problem.

My university has this weird anti-domestic violence campaign, and one of their ads is a picture of a girl with a cell phone, and the caption is, "love or leash?" or something like that. *shrug* I'd say the cell phone sounds like a good gift, if she doesn't have one. Mine's incredibly handy, I've found. Really nice to have around, it's an extra sense of security for a girl.

as long as you don't mind paying another set of monthly bills for, perhaps, forever...

Well, the longest he'd probably have to pay is 1 year if not, 2. But like I said before, I'm sure she's going to break up with have after 3.5 years just so she can make free calls to all her friends and family - get real...

It's not that she's going to break up with him to get free calls. If they break up for ANY reason, she's got a cell phone that he may be paying for. I know it's a little far-fetched, but relationships have been known to end for any variety reasons in this day and age.
