Is a cd changer worth it?

I have a nice surround sound system. Here is my question. Would it be worth it to get a cheapo DVD player that can play cds and mp3s and has optical out so that I can hook it up to the optical in on my reciever? Would I notice any more quality over the rca cables that I currently have my portable CD player hooked up with? The big thing that I want is the ability to play mp3s on the system, I suppose I could always get a real long rca cable but i dont know if that would sound as good.

Go for the DVD player with the optical. You may not notice a difference in sound quality, but you can then at least watch DVD's, play .mp3's and cd's etc. The optical should be more immune to noise than analog or even digital connection. It should sound better too.

Assuming your RCA cable is under 50ft for playing mp3s, you won't notice any signal degration, IMO. I run a 12ft RCA to my receiver and it sounds fine.

Which is technicly better depends on a couple things, the quality of the D/A converters in the receiver, the D/A converters in the DVD player and the quality of the RCA cable
you probbaly wont be able to hear a difference unless your RCA cable is really sh!ty or you have an uber cheap DVD player paired with a really high end receiver

Is a cd changer worth it?
In my opinion, no - if you're going for a mega-changer (e.g. 200 discs.) I had one and it was a pain. When I selected "random" - it would spin the noisy carousel around to find another song on another disc. Go for the MP3 player with the digital connection and record some higher bit-rate MP3 CDs. The digital connection will be needed if you desire to play Dolby Digital and DTS DVDs.

see the thing is that I already have a PS2 hooked up with component and optical audio. This thing would be used for mp3s.... wait a tick, ps2 can play audio cds! Problem solved!
