Is a AMD R9 270X one of the best midrange?

A few days ago I seen a Dell 24" on Newegg and it finally made me upgrade my 2005FPW. But after clicking order I realized I will need a new video card. My 4870 plays all my games at 1680x1050 just fine, but I don't think it will handle BF3 at 1920x1200. Plus I've wanted BF4 but it's DX11 only! :(

So I'm trying to catch up on what are the good cards these days. I am considering the AMD R9 270X. I was looking at the GTX 760, but it's ~$50 more and I can get BF4 included with the AMD, which is another ~$50.

Do you think the 270X will be sufficient for the next few years playing games at 1920x1200? I don't need a bunch of AA and stuff, just mid to high settings.

My 4870 is about 5.5 years old now, and as mentioned plays all my games fine. Do you guys consider the 270X about the level of a 4870 at the time?

At $400, the 280X is more than I want to spend. So I think that pretty much leaves the GTX760 as the only other option unless there are some previous gen ones.

It's too bad that mining crap has jacked the 280X price up. The article on AT from December 2nd says 280X is $299, but really it's $399+.

760 is faster overall, but not 50 dollars faster.

No choice but AMD for BF4 anyway, since their cards get a +7 Hyped Mantle of No Bottleneck for free when they take a spec in Proprietary Software.

No.

Depends on what you consider adequate. Even if you use it now, you will have to compromise settings to get the gold-standard steady 60 fps at 1200p. In some titles you will have to compromise on settings a lot. Either way I don't think using it for "years" would be reasonable, but this depends entirely on what type of games you play and whether you're willing to compromise on image quality settings. Some are okay with it, others aren't. BF4 plays "decent" on the 270X but I highly doubt that BF4 will be the only game you play for years at a time.

The GTX 760 is about 12-15% faster overall (probably closer in bf4) but costs a bit more, while the GTX 770 would be significantly faster yet costs 330ish. I think the 770 would offer the best gaming experience at the 300$ price level. Even though the 760 is faster than the 270 by a healthy amount, it is also more expensive.

TL'DR: 770 would be the best bet if you can afford it, 760/270X will require some compromises (depending on what you play) at 1200p.

Yeah I guess a 270X isn't as high end as a 4870 at the time. I forgot, but I think I paid around $280 for it in 2008.

If Nvidia had BF4 with 760 or 770 I would already have one on order. Because of BF4, the 760 is $100 more than the 270X to me. So I think it would be best to stay at 270x range or go past to 770.

I was also going to suggest the 770, it just sucks that they no longer come with 3 games. Looks like they only come with AC4 now, which you could probably sell for $20.

On the other hand, the only 270X that seem to come with BF4 are the XFX and Sapphire cards. In that case, I would definitely go with the Sapphire card. Just know that you will have to sacrifice some settings in BF4 with the 270X.

I can't believe I'm saying this but a GTX 760 might actually be the best bang for the buck midrange card now if you can get it on sale. There was a sale for $230 one after rebate that just expired. It's got ~7970 speed.

This GTX 760 @ $210 is hands down the best bang for the buck card at the moment.

You can sell/trade the Assassin's Creed that comes with the GTX 760. If you're paying $50 for BF4, you're overpaying by about 2x... You can find them in the FS/FT forum section for $25-30.

I'd read around as many reviews as you can. The 270 or 270x are pretty solid for 1080P. You'll need to compromise on some settings though.

For no comprimises at that rez i'd go 770 or 280x. For the 770 you want to consider the 4gb version. The 280x is too expensive for just gaming, the 770 4gb is a bit expensive too.

Kind off a bad spot for upgrading because the 280x at $300 has been destroyed by mining.

If budget is $200 i'd just get a 270 non x for $180 and clock it to 1050/1500, otherwise I'd say stretch to the 780 or hope 280x prices drop. I don't like anything in between there.

My son has been playing BF4 with a 4870 at 1080p. I'm not sure of the settings. (I had to RMA his 7870 that he said played it on high.) Minimum recommended is a 8800GT. It is not Dx11 only.

I have a 4870 512mb... Believe me, it is not one of the cards you want to be playing BF4 on. I think it looked better and I had better performance when I played it on my 4770k iGPU.

That's a good deal. Better deal than the 270X/7870s which are going for $180-$200 without games. $210 and can resell the game to bring it down to $190 or keep it, and the GTX 760 is ~18% faster than the 270X at 1920x1200. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_270_Direct_Cu_II_OC/26.html

Edit: Sorry, I meant to link to http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_270X/26.html which shows the GTX 760 is 12% faster at 1080p than the 270X, and 23% faster than the 7870.

Still, $210 and a free game (which some people resell) and 12% more performance than a 270X is a strong combination.

That's the 270 (nonX)

bf4_1920_1080.gif

BF4, hardly any difference between 270X and 760. 1.6fps and that's pre Mantle.

bf3_1920_1080.gif

~10% in BF3 but both are above 60fps so the overall experience is quite comparable.

OP, they are both good cards for the purpose.

I think this picture speaks for itself. OP, grab that 760 while it's still there.

I do have to wonder why the 760 isn't much faster than the 270x in BF4. It's mostly the same game, at least superficially... right?

How many performance updates has Nvidia put out for the 760 in BF4?
