bought the k75sa pro/xp2400+ combo from fry's @89. add a $10 coolmaster xdream hsf = $99 for this combo.

my chip says:
axda2400dkv3c
aiuhb 0324wpmw

hm..the copyright is 1999?

anyway, how do i overclock this? what this "unofficial" bios i hear about for the k7s5a pro? and is it still the pencil trick to unlock the multiplier on AMD chips? (been a long time since i read about this.)

I havent had much expienece with later date 2400's but they have always OC'ed well in the past.. Id say maybe 2300MHz is possible... Now OC'ing with that board I have no clue but I believe thats the board with onboard vid? If so that board has no bios options for multi and fsb increase... Tbred b chips have all there bridges connected and on nforce2 boards you can access all multis... to change the multi on that board though you'll have to lock it in by cutting the approprite bridges and this might be a newer style chip that has unexposed bridges so its a little tough to cut them...

I'll try to find a link to the site that has all the bridge info...

overclocking the k7s5a eh? well, you might be able to overclock 1 MHZ, and thats about it.

The K7S5A doesn't come with any overclocking abilities by default. You can go here to get the cheepo bios (link near top of page). This bios comes with additional fsb options of 138, 143, 146, and 150. You can also use software to change the fsb from within windows; this allows you to pick any of the above speeds and 166 as well. If you're handy with a soldering iron and don't mind risking your board, there are hardware mods which can give you multiplier and voltage control as well. You can find a link to this in the K7S5A FAQ near the top of the previous link.

So i can get multiplier control by modding the mobo, and not touch the cpu?

Try this, only $53. Has VDIMM,VAGP,VCORE, PCI/AGP lock and multiplier adjustments. Plus its only a tad slower than the nforce 2 chip, do a search for a review on it, I think ocworkbench had one, lotsa praises.

ECS = Extremely Cost-effective Solution, but not what I'd call a stellar overclocking board, even with the cheepo bios.

I bought the Fry's dealie for a client one time - a 2200+ OEM and ECS K7S5A Pro. Tried to return the mobo for credit, but they indicated that price was only for the combo. If I wanted just the chip, they wanted me to pay $20 more.

So he made out getting $10 from your friend for it.

fry's still has the xp2400/k7s5a pro for $89? hmm...if my xp2000 and the mobo sell for a decent amount, I might just get my dad to grab one from the fry's in texas :)

as for OCing this board, with the honeyX bios and the cheepo bios, i'm only able to bump my xp2000 up to xp2100 speeds :(

kicks the crap out of my malfunctioning soyo k7ada though

not steller, but possible. just got my 1800+ to 2.35ghz using just the wire mod. 59 for cpu and m/b makes it stellar:) i'll spend the money saved on a slk 800 cooler.

you don't oc on ecs using fsb much. you might be able to eek out 150/147 though bios without hang, but thats a pain. just wire mod to increase multiplier. 166 is possible through speed fan adjustment in windows, but thats a pain.

That is a good combo, and should overclock nicely. Dont let anyone tell you different, while its not an overclockers dream, it is very stable, and offers good performance.

I have experienced memory issues with the Honey X and Cheepos Bios, so I went back to Stock Bios. I now overclock with CPUFSB (http://www.podien.onlinehome.de/CPUFSB.HTM). I just put it to start with windows, and thats it. Plus, if by the odd change you CPU is able to run at 166FSB (2500mhz) you will not be able to post from BIOS with a 166fsb, so you will have to use CPUFSB.

I have not (nor will I) tried the wire mod for multipliers, and voltage. The fear of electrocution, and sudden fire keeps me humble.

There is a multiplier mod that you can use on the chip (http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?/html/workshop/pinmod/amd_pinmod.html).
I have not tried it but some swear it works. Maybe you can get 16x133 (2600+ speed).

yup, people are hitting insane speeds. some get 2.5ghz with air cooling. course they use slk-800 heatsinks and decent fans to do that. apparently theres an even newer stepping that will do even higher. or so people on overclockers.com forums say.

if its still around, i think weekend deals end on tuesday? the 1800+ combo is the best overclocker since the chips are the 1.5v ones. go to overclockers.com this thread and others for explanations

apparently this stepping is the ultimate oc chip so far. 2.4ghz air is typical with only slight bump. no more bridge cutting either.

spend the difference on an slk-800 cooler for peace of mind and extra oc potential.
