is a 9800gt a good match for my rig?

just recently upgraded to the following:

Phenom II X3..unlocked to four cores small overclock for now at 2.9.
2 gigs of ram
new motherboard...

I currently have my old 7950gt in there...ran out of funds to upgrade the video. Anyway, good deal on a 9800gt came up...How much would that 9800gt hold my system back?

the 7950gt does ok in what I'm playing now...TF2, Bad company 2 (most settings on low).

would I be able to run at medium to high in Bad Company 2 with the 9800gt? 1680x1050 resolution.

thanks,
Chappie

Bad Company 2 is a tough cookie on both the cpu and gpu. 9800GT has become a budget card. If you had the money, you could pair a HD 5870 with your cpu, but since you're on a budget, a HD 5770 might a better choice, or perhaps a cheap 1GB HD 4870.

9800GT will be a lot faster then your 7950GT though and if you can really get it for cheap, it's a big upgrade, albeit only compared to your old videocard.

In the Hot Deals section, you can find a 5770 for $130 AR and a 4870 for $140AR.

That being said, a 9800gt will work fine in BC2 at 1680x1050. I'm having no trouble with my 8800gt at that res. I'm not going any lower than 45fps and I'm averaging 60, at high settings. I set it to DX9 to improve performance, so I'm missing out on some upgraded effects.

If you can get the 9800gt for $85 or less, it's a great deal. It all depends what you want to spend. At 2/3 the cost of a 5770, you'll get 2/3 the performance.

$70 is a little too much for that card. $50 would be a good deal. if you're going to spend that much spend another 10-15 and look at used higher-end cards instead, maybe 4850/70, gts250, or gtx 260.

That CPU can still play ANY game out there perfectly. You could pair a 5850/70 with it and it won't really hold it back.

It can't play Arma 2 perfectly which is probably more demanding than Crysis. My i7 920 @4ghz and 5970 doesn't average much more than 30-40 fps.

Nevertheless it's still a good cpu for most games.

wow, is arma 2 really that demanding? I had no idea...I thought a 5970 at those speeds would play anything!

What res are you playing at though?
