Is a 7900GS good enough for widescreen?

Hello everyone. I have been looking at benchmarks etc, and was wondering if a 7900 GS was enough to power current games on a 22" widescreen monitor. Also, would it fit in well with a budget AMD X2 3600 build? Thanks.

how long do you plan to keep the system before you upgrade it? a 7900 gs will push your system nicely on all current games. It obviously won't do so well 2 years down the road, which is something you wanna think about if you want to keep it running well without any upgrades withing 24 months.

there are wide screen resolutions lower then 1650x1050 so in the future a game that your 7900gs can't cut it, lower the resolution a bit and still be fine.

I was running a 7900gs on mt 22" monitor, and really I would not recommend it for anything higher than 1280 x 1024.

Yes, it will run all CURRENT games fine, but some of them only just. F.E.A.R for example is ok in single player, but multiplayer the card takes abit of a knock at 1680 x 1050. Oblivion is playable, but depends on how fussy you are about settings.

for 1680 x 1050 (and it really is best to run monitors using their native res) I would not recommend anything less than a x1950xtx. Lets face it, people who splash out on 22" monitors should not really be holding back on their GPU.

QueBert : I guess I won't be upgrading the system for a couple of years at least. Its a budget limitation, therefore was wondering if an X2 3600 would do well down the road. If not, what is the next best option.

Chrismr : I don't plan on multiplayer. If it can play current games at the native monitor resolution, it should suit me fine. As for the 22" monitor, I want that mainly for movies, games, documents/browsing (windows side by side etc) and photo editing. The 7900GS card is the only thing that fits into my budget for now. Are there any other similar recommendations?
Thanks for the replies.

A 7900gs will overclock pretty well. I did the volt-mod on my EVGA to get 1.4volts, now I'm running 685/885 with a Zalman cooler on it. Maybe you should wait just a bit and get a DX10 capable card of some kind.

my 7800gt do well on 1680x1050 widescreen for 20", but if you got 24" then look for better option
