I have a Celery 366@550, 100fsb and it plays DVDs, DIVX, captures video from multiple sources, plays audio CDs, MP3, ect just fine.

sweet, worried cuz certain divx files my cpu usage stays at 70-80 percent. other divx files it stays at 45-50 percent. i have a tbird 750.

A tbired 750 is much more powerful than a 700mhz Celeron.

You could probably get away easily with widescreen DVDs but when you get to divxs at 640*480 fullscreen problems might start to ensue...

But it really depends on the quality/size of the DivX file you're watching.

i know its lot stronger, but if a divx file uses up 80 percent cpu time, i wondered how much it'll take from a celery, thats y i stated that.
anyways, i guess its the quality of the divx file that dictates whether or not playback will be good on a slow system. but does divx playback depend much on amount of cache L1 and L2 you have??

On a sort of related note, can a video card effect output? I have a Athlon XP 1600+ w/ 256 mb DDR and a 12x Toshiba DVD-ROM that has problems displaying low quality VCD's and DVD's. The problem is the same for both, occasionally, the bottom portion flickers/moves/is not steady. The only thing I could possibly attribute the problem to is the video card, a Kaiser TNT2 card.

low quality maybe. i remember my old celly 850 with a 100mhz bus couldn't play some stuff back quite right, esp with filters up high. dvd yea i guess, esp with some hardware accel from video card .. don't multitask. 700mhz is kinda low.. celly with 66mhz bus is ick. dvd takes less processing at a given resolution. most cheesy divx are lower resolution then dvd, but still require very high processing.

my laptop is a pIII 450 ... it handles DVDs well, and most Divx movies run good, sometimes they get a bit choppy though (can be fixed by using the official divx player and dropping the quality a tad)

HRmm...Well I rip my Anime DVDs to my hdd for easy access (That and I can minimize the time that they are exposed to the "outer world" if I can use my tvout) and I usually go for around 350 megs for an episode....That is ~1600-1900 bitrate @ 160k of audio at 640*464 and usually it hovers in the high 50%th percentile and when you get action alll over the place it moves into the high 70s. And this is on a 1700+ overclocked to 1.75Ghz mind you so that is why I'm skeptical. This is at high quality in both the divx player and jacking up the codec settings.

As for hardware acceleration, only the Radeon 9500+ series has that. Divx 5.03 included support to speed up encoding and decoding. But only the Radeon9500/pro 9600 9700/rp 9800/pro can do that.
