2 phone lines and a dial tone + around 200 calls per month ( around 5 calls per day, usually to go online) + Verizon in NYC = $70

is that normal?

no it's 8.61 per month for a dial tone, and 9 cents for each call (regardless of length of call). Using Verizon in Queens, ny

That's a rip. Most plans are like $20-30 for unlimited local calls.

I'm paying something like 80-95 a month which includes local calls and a few national calls. I live in manhattan. Pretty normal I'd say. My mother pays at least 120 a month but she frequently uses long distance.

In NYC queens just to maintain a local line with dial tone and taxes is somewhere around 20 bucks.

2 lines X dialtone = 8.61 X 2
2-300 calls per month = (2-300) X .09)
taxes like double everything = :|

Omg, it's the bloody taxes!!!! :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

If you have a cable or DSL modem get Vonage. It's like a normal telephone but it uses your high speed connection on your end.
I pay about $27ish a month with taxes and I get all the features, unlimited local calling in my region, and 500 minutes of long distance a month. They also offer an unlimited long distance plan for $34.99 a month.

Huh..I have one line with caller ID and call waiting and it's like $40 a month after taxes. I'm not sure if we have some sort of plan or what, the gf signed up for it...I wanted vonage...I know we're paying flat rate for local calls though. Manhattan, btw.

I'm pretty sure you can just call up Verizon to have them look at your calling activity to see if there's a plan they offer that'd save you some money.
