I really want a Dell Inspiron 8600. I travel a lot and want to replace my PIII 700 desktop, but worry about digital video editing.

Yes, but only in 60GB. Can't get 7200 RPM in 80 or 100 GB drives. I do such a small amount of video editing, plus I travel a lot, so I'd hate to limit my hard drive size and increase power comsumption if I don't have to.

any modern (say ~1998+) drive will be able to sustain the 3.6MB/s that miniDV records at. capturing miniDV is not very demanding at all. on the other hand, editing the video may benifit from a faster drive. if it is a cheap upgrade to a 5400rpm+ drive (under $50), i would go for it, but otherwise it is unnecessary.

The only choices are 4200 RPM 30-40-60-80-100 GB or 7200 RPM 60 GB for $100 more than the 4200 RPM 60 GB.

I thought processor speed was more important for video editing than HD speed?
