I have been out of the video card game for a long time now. I have a 9800gtx, I was looking to purchase a 285GTX but not sure. Is this card getting past its prime? I want a decent graphics card that is still got some life left for future games. What is your opinion?

Thanks

amd 1055t 3.7ghz
G.skill 4gb ddr3 1600
bfg 9800gtx

res. 1920x1200

cost of the card ~$115

I am looking to spend no more that $130 on a used card.

you did not really give enough information. what are all your current pc specs? what resolution do you play at? how much will the gtx285 cost you?

True we need more information, but IMO it's not worth investing anything in an old generation of hardware. It would be more worthwhile to spend money on an Nvidia 400, or 500 generation card, or an AMD 5000 or 6000 series card.

for around the 130 bucks you are looking to spend, you could grab a brand new gtx460 1gb if you don't mind a rebate..

I know it seems silly but I would prefer a used card, kinda like a new car depreciation.

well that is silly because the gtx460 has already had a massive price cuts. at 130 bucks it is already 90 bucks cheaper than when it came out and will be phased out before it gets much if any cheaper. basically if you go to sell it in a year or so then it will not lose much of its value anyway. a used gtx285 is hotter, louder, consumes more power and is DX10 so there is is no reason not to get an equally fast brand new DX11 card for the same price. not to mention that used gtx285 will have no warranty.

ok sounds like a plan then, I was not dead set on a used card. Just used the car logic

So this 460 is a great card that will not be a bottleneck for me at all, right?

well your depreciation logic makes sense on a newly released high end card but the gtx460 is mid range and has been around for a while. at 1920x1200, a gtx460 is a decent card and is a bit faster than your 9800gtx. you will certainly want to oc the card though because that is a demanding res when using highest settings in a game. I would probably want a bigger jump in performance but it it will cost you quite a bit more.

Depending on what you plan on playing, ANY card at ~$130 can be a bottleneck for you.

Is the newegg $139.99ar deal what you were talking about?
well there was Palit for 129 AR but the Evga for 15 bucks more would be a better company to deal with. plus the Evga comes with Just Cause 2 and Mafia 2.

for around $115 you basically have 2 options;
1) 5770 1gb
2) 460 768mb

460 768mb, has ~86 GB/s memory bandwidth. Costs around ~120$.
5770 1gb, has ~77 GB/s memory bandwidth. Costs around ~99$.

The 460 768mb is a faster card than the 5770 1gb.

Not by huge amounts but like ~10-15% atleast in more or less everything, it costs abit more too though (~20% more or so), and uses abit more energy.

The 5770 is a unusually good overclocker, most people can get ram up over 1400mhz stable ( which puts it around ~90 GB/s memory bandwidth)

Ofcourse same can be said about the 460 768mb (good overclockers).

amd 1055t 3.7ghz

A phenom II x 6 cores @ 3.7ghz

You should def. upg with that 8800gt your running atm.
If its possible, you should go abit bigger than a 460/5770 though, get a 5870 or 6950, there abouts.

Agreed totally. I only recommended the 768 model because it's within the budget.

he would do better to spend a little more and go with the 1gb model. 768mb is not enough for some games at 1920x1200. plus an Evga 1gb card comes with 2 games he may want to play.

yes, 768mb model is good for 1680x1050 because performance is very similar to the 1gb model, but once you get into higher resolutions like 1920x1080 the 1gb model really starts to pull away. plus, the 768mb model at that resolution would typically be slower than a gtx 285 or, at best, equal to it. the 1gb card will be faster, and after overclocking will absolutely blow it away. best overclocking tool is afterburner, make sure that the card you get works with that.

GTX285 if you are looking for a physx card maybe :p

Otherwise no, maybe for $50 I'd buy it.

Rubbish! the GTX 285 is a very fast card a lot better than the GTX 460 768MB or the 5770, and DX11 with these two cards is insignificant.

Like they said your best bet is the best bang for buck card on the market today 460 1GB version can be had for 130 to 160 dollars avg.... You wont be dissapointed. Your AMD is a six core is that right ? You will not have CPU bottleneck thats for shure.

they were suggesting the GTX460 1GB
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/317?vs=313
Which is much better than the GTX285

As for the GTX460 768MB
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/317?vs=315
It trades blows in performance based on the specific game and setting (so, about equal), but has much better compute score, much better power consumption, and better noise levels.
