Is a 2100+ worth it?

I am seriously debating getting a 2100+ when I get back home. I currently have a 1.4 OCed to 1.63... I'd only get 100mhz more out of the 2100+ so it doesn't seem like it to me..... am I missing something here, or is it worth the upgrade.

I currently have a gig of ram and I do not want to have to reinvest in a new board and ram, just get a better processor....

how high w/o a mod can you OC those things?

Why would you want to do that? People used to recommend that you at least double your processor speed to get a substantial difference. If you move up in speed 50% or less, you may not even be able to notice the difference. I'd wait until you can get something running at 3 gig.

Besides, what do you need that speed for anyway? Your graphics card would probably be the bottleneck in games, or a slow hard drive would be the bottleneck when you boot your OS...

there was something posted over in hotdeals about a abit board and a xp 2xxx (can't remember off the top of my head) and they got it over 3ghz... leme find the link.

edit: my bad it was a p4 1.8 that was over 3ghz

In your case... not really
unless you can find it cheap
it may offer you a tad better performance... but you certainly won't be awestruck.

Yea, now that I think about it, I'm gonna save the $90 and put it towards a DVD burner and a 9700 pro :D

God I love warranties when my stuff breaks ;)

If I were you I would wait until you can get the chip that has the 333 front side bus. I think that will bring noticable performace.
That is what I am doing.

you guys are forgetting, the XPs offer more then just a faster mhz speed... you also get the sse instruction set, so if you are doing media encoding you will probably notice another big step up in speed. Also, you get a cooler running processor. Instead of overclocking to get your speed, you can leave this one stock and get a nice quiet hsf and give your ears a treat :)

meh, my duron had SSE, just not SSE2.

I just went from a Duron 1.3 setup with 768 mb of pc 133 ram, geforce 3 ti200 system to a Pentium 4 1.6a chip that overclocks to 2.56 ghz, 256 ddr, and geforce 4 ti 4200 card @ 300/600 and its a night and day difference. The thing I notice most is the ram. Its so freaking fast its scary. Benchmarks a tick under rambus speeds at 160 FSB (locked 1:1)

Right, your 1.3 duron was a morgan core, which has the SSE built in. I have the same 1.4 tbird the poster did, and it certainly doesn't have that built in. To me, that will be the single most important reason for me to bump my cpu up (when I can afford it). Later this week actually I'll be making the switch a ddr (perhaps a bit late...) because I got a steal on a SOYO Dragon Platnum Plus 333... I hope I appreciate the difference as much as you do, I think I will:)

I went to a 2000+ from a 1600+ and could nto tell the difference except in my crunching speed.

There you go! I am running a Duron at 1200 with a Rage 128. (remember those??) My next upgrade will be video, and shortly thereafter, more RAM.
