Is a 2001 cavalier any good?

I have been looking for a basic commuter for my wife and found a cheap 2001 cavalier. It has 30k miles on it, carfax is perfect, it has been serviced like clockwork. The thing looks practically new. The only issues I have found is the dash rattles a bit. Other cars I have been looking at are a couple of newer Focus ('05 and '06 seem reasonably priced), but those would be a couple thousand more. I prefer the Focus, but really my wife would drive this thing maybe 8k/year, not sure the extra couple grand is worth it.

It is at a dealer (trade-in), they are listing it for $6k, they have hinted $5.5k. I haven't really talked numbers with them at all, just looked at the car, wonder if I should pursue it. it is a 4dr base model, no options.

For $6000, you should be able to find something better. Shop around some more.

Lol for 6k you're well into early 2000s Civic/Corolla territory if you shop around, so no point in getting a Cavalier. The Cavalier would be a good deal at maybe $3k, but not 6k.

That's way too much. I was going to buy a 2006 cavalier with 20k miles for that much.

That would be a fine car, but they want too much for it. If you could get it for less than $4k it would be a fair deal.

i would get civic/corolla/focus instead for that kind of money

^ This.

Just make sure the Focus is 2005+, you're guaranteed the excellent Mazda Duratec motor (great fuel economy, no timing belt to worry about, smooth/decent power).

I wish. I have looked at SEVERAL civic/corolla's, to get anything in decent shape I would need to spend $8k-9k+. $6k civic in the bay area gets you mid/late 90's, 130k+ miles with severely worn interior. I have stopped looking at those because they are SOO ridiculously overpriced in this area.

Can you do better by buying one somewhere within driving distance, like Reno?
