Is 9800np better than 9700Pro

I'm trying to decide what to replace my 9000Pro 128 with. I'm running a 9500Pro in my other box and this one is faster except for the vd card. Would there be much difference between the 9700Pro vs 9800np if there is no overclocking?

it is pretty much a tossup if not overclocking I would say 9700 Pro because it can be driver hacked to be like a 9800 and its default clock speeds are higher than a 9800 NP

OTOH if you find a 9800 NP with good memory ie lower than 3.0 ns chips than I would suggest that

if you dont feel like bothering with that stuff get whatever is cheaper

It is a toss up as well from which vendor you get it from. Hell, I bought one from directly from ATI and got stuck with cheap memory. While online sapphires are 40 dollars cheaper and come with better memory.

Does not mean all ATI cards come with cheap memory, they seem to like to mix things up to keep the customer guessing.

huh?

sapphire is ONE of the companies:

hercules
ATI
powercolor

are some others. heh its funny that you should think that. ATI do build their own cards, unlike nvidia

oh yeah i was reading this hardocp article and realized that "joytech" is another one that i know. oh well

and there are probably many companies that are in taiwan that builds ATI cards and are unknown to the US. same goes for nvidia.

me thinks the GPU are pretty much like a lemonade-mix. anyone with it can build one and sell one. whether the lemonade made tastes sweet or sour depends on who made it and what was put into it

Do not count on egtting a 9800NP with good memory. It's a total crap shoot. If you get very lucky you'll get one with the Samsung 2.86ns ram and then you have essentially a Pro card (with o/c), but those seem pretty rare. Most have Infineon 3.3ns ram that can not overclock at all. In that case your NP will be equivalent to a stock 9700Pro.

I realize companies make the cards with ATI's chips on it....Thats not what I ment at all

I ment I beleive Sapphire and ATI cards are made by the same maunfacturer...and others like Hercules or whatever is made by them ....

I beleive Sapphire make ATI (ATI's own cards) as well is all I ment 🙂
