I've been offered a deal on a 9800GX2 to replace my HD2900 from last year. It should fit with the rest of my current gaming rig (C2D@3.2, P35 mobo, CM690 case, Antec Quattro 850 PSU, gaming@1920x1200), but is it worth getting over the new contenders (4870 and GTX260)?

Price is pretty much a wash in my location, and I'm pretty much going on raw performance in older games (Oblivion, Medieval2, Gothic3, Dx9c SM2&3 stuff) - I'd even consider some sort of 3870 tri-fire if it helped fps (particularly minimum values!).

Edit: for usual typos.

If you are only going to play older games, you definitely won't need a 9800GX2 (except maybe Oblivion). It depends on the deal you are getting. One thing to keep in mind is your minimums won't be as good as with a single GPU solution most likely.

Here is a link to a 9800 GX2 vs. GTX 260 thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...ey=y&keyword1=9800+GX2

The GTX 260 has been shown to have better minimum FPS then the GTX 260 and 4870, but the 4870 gets better average FPS than the GTX 260.

The 9800 GX2 is a very powerful card, but like with all multi-GPU cards, it can have its issues.

If you plan on doing some high OCing, I recommend the GTX 260, if not, then the 4870, but if this is all just for older games, then keep what you got.
