is 8X backwards compatible with 4X?

my motherboard i purchased is an Asus P4PE\L and it says that the AGP slot is only 4X. Can i buy say, a ATI 9500 Pro or GeForce4 4200 8X be compatible with the Asus without any problems or complications?
 
is they weren't then ATi and Nvidia would be out of business as all their new cards are going AGP8x compliant
