is 80W psu enough for G620+ H61M-ITX

I want to upgrate my mini-itx PC, replacing the old Atom 330 with a new Intel G620 and a Asrock H61M-ITX motherboard, 2 sticks of DDR3 and one 2,5" WD scorpio blue. NO dedicated gpu.

I've a GA620IF mini-itx case with 90W DC\DC psu and 80W AC\DC 12V psu.
Is this 80-90W enough?

Intel G620 has a TDP of 65W. I doubt your current PSU is up to the task, really. But how many amps are on the +12V of your itx PSU? Maybe it could handle a 35W TDP Celeron G440?

yes, it has a TDP of 65W, but from some review (like this) the maximum power consumption after the power supply is only 40W (for the entire system)

Intel's actually doing some sneaky tricks with that. Those 35W TDP numbers they give to the "low-power" versions are actually completely inaccurate. In reality, those versions only save you 5W at full load, and next to nothing at idle. Because of that, they actually give you the low-profile cooler on both the 65W and "35W" Pentiums. It's bad to go with the lower power versions because they lose a lot of efficiency due to their lower clock speeds and meager savings in power.

OP, for the low cost Sandy Bridge CPUs neither the 'T' lower power versions nor the Pentiums are a good choice. Your 80W PSU will handle any Sandy Bridge Pentium even at full CPU+GPU load, but the Celerons are extremely close in performance to them and cost a good amount less. For example, the Celeron G530 costs $20 less than the Pentium G620 and should only be 6-7% slower on average. :thumbsup:

Alas, this is not true. I just got a Celeron G530 and the cooler won't allow it to fit in cases like the Mini Box M350 or In Win BR661 (or whatever model was). The 65W CPUs come with heatsinks that are closer in size to the one that comes with a 2500K, but without the copper base (all aluminum).

Alas, this is not true. I just got a Celeron G530 and the cooler won't allow it to fit in cases like the Mini Box M350 or In Win BR661 (or whatever model was). The 65W CPUs come with heatsinks that are closer in size to the one that comes with a 2500K, but without the copper base (all aluminum).

Probably an error. This is the cooler they were designed to come with. If I were you, I would've tried to contact Intel so they give you the correct ultra low-profile cooler. :/

I can confirm that the Celeron G530 I ordered for the upcoming budget buyer's guide does not have a low-profile cooler; its cooler is the same as the one that came with my i3-2100.

Then Intel is doing some weird shenanigans. Do the normal Pentiums like the G620 actually come with the ultra low-profile cooler? If so, it makes no sense: the G620 consumes ~1W more than the G530 both at full load.

If it's not an ULP cooler then it may have problems with the OP's case.

I know, not sure why you point this out. Celeron G440 is single-core, while SB Pentiums are dual-core. Would make sense that the Celeron uses half the power, no?

Oh. The G440 is probably the worst CPU in the Sandy Bridge lineup, so I'd probably discard it. Even the G620T is better for the money. Power consumption is nowhere near 1/2 as low. Idle power is somewhat higher for the single-core and lower at full load.

Well, I think we both know that they'll ship CPUs with whatever cooler they can get cheapest at any given point in time. Sometimes that might be the non-low-pro cooler.

The one G620 I bought came with a low-pro cooler. But I generally don't use the G620 because it's priced to compete with the AII X3 445, and the tri-core AMD chip is imho a superior general computing CPU.

For what it's worth, I got a retail-box Core i3-2120T recently for my dad's PC. 35W TDP, and it came with one of the wee little low-profile coolers.
