Entirely agree.

I usually do at least 90 on my way home from school. Shaves off about an hour from my 7 hour drive.

SUV's, too, give you the feeling that you'll just go over traffic if something happens. People don't know what makes a car truly safe: its ability to AVOID an accident, which starts with a cognizant driver.

I find it ironic that recent luxury cars should provide that sense of security at all, what with the confounding iDrive and other electronic distractions now present in cars and society itself.

OP: I'm not quite old enough to drive legally, but even if you were able to handle a car at 80mph quite securely and responsibly, it might be prudent of you to keep your speed down simply to avoid paying for tickets and insurance rate hikes, especially since insurance for new drivers is very expensive as it is. (If you can, however, afford to pay the "speeder's tax" and run that risk of blemishes on your record--check statutes for how much above the limit is considered reckless driving in your area, as well--more power to you.)

Hell no, you should be driving faster...

I remember, me my friend and his dad & brother went to the seattle international car show in his 1995 BMW M3. Those cars are fast as fvck. Well, after we left, we hit the freeway at about 11PM. Seattle isn't the dryest places in the world and we were going 120mph with no problems at all...

Point is, if you gotta fast car, your a good driver, then why not??

i think it's fine as long as you're not weaving through much slower traffic...

the cop didn't think so though.....

SLOW DOWN!

Actually gas powered engines run more efficiently at higher speeds. As for the endangering everyone argument, everyone does that each time the get behind the wheel of a vehicle regardless of speed. The way I see it is that if you are traveling the same speed or slightly(5mph) faster than those around you then it's fine if you are over the limit. If you are zippin' past everyone like they are standing still you need to slow down. You also need to know what your vehicle will and won't do. In my car I've done 40mph ramps at 60. Would I do it if road wasn't perfectly dry, there was traffic around me, or in a truck/suv? No, no, and hell no but I know that my car will stick it as long as it is dry. As a disclaimer I don't recommend doing this often, if you get caught, that's all she wrote.

Actually your car typically has optimum fuel consumption at around 60-65 mph.

No.

I've gone 115 with no problems. If you can't safely maintain a vehicle at 100 miles per hour in good conditions on a freeway, you shouldn't have a license at all.

there's a good number of people who believe if you find out if you can drive at 100mph+ you shouldn't have a liscense at all too :)

Depending on the highway. I drop 80-90 down and up I-5 in California b/w San Diego and Irvine on monday.

Generally i aim for 80 mph actually and dont drive faster.
Then again 6 months isn't very long to have been driving.. but *shrugs* if it was safe.

I'll weigh in on this thread.

I usually drive around 60 to 70mph. Here in MN, 70 is speeding on most roads. I sometimes get passed by people going 80, and it is flat out dangerous.

When sharing the road, it's everyone's job to make it safe. You can't go around saying "I'm a good driver, it's ok if I speed". What about the other driver who sucks? You need to keep your vehicle in control, and maximize your chance to keep it in control in an emergency, whether or not you caused the accident. 80mph is too fast to keep your vehicle in control at all times.

Oh, and on a country road, at night, 80mph is suicide. Around here, you're likely to hit a deer, dog, raccoon, etc. Any of which can cause you to crash your car. At 80mph, you're dead meat in that situation.

I've driven a ~1990 hatchback (1.1l engine Metro) at 85mph without issue, but it can't even GO 100mph, let alone be safely maintainable at that speed.

If the car and driver are in good condition, the driver is experienced/alert and road/traffic conditions allow then no, 80Mph is not dangerous.

I wouldn't want to drive a '90 Rover Metro at 30mph... :p

been driving for over 2 years.....routinely do 85-90 on the motorways and dual carriage ways here. its pretty much the norm, and actually feels really slow now.

i think that the standard of driving in the UK is overall higher than that of the US (yes ive been and seen motorways in the US.....NYC,FLorida,New Mexico, Colorado, Nevda, Utah..)

slower people stick to the slow lanes, and let us faster drivers get on with it.

There is no such thing as a 'slow lane' in the UK.

Most people go 80MPH just to keep up with the rest of the traffic, so you're really not alone on this one...

no. it is too slow, and people have things to do and places to go. it is a safe and comfortable speed for most people.

my preferable speed is 138 km/h (86.25 mph).

My point was lanes are called by number, 1,2 & 3. All lanes apart from lane 1(the inside lane) are passing lanes.

I cannot see the point in owning two Mercialago's.

I usually try to stay between 80 and 87 not because it is fun but because I found out that I get 36mpg instead of 30mpg which I got with my usual driving of pedal to the metal (which took me to about 95 mph - 45hp VW Polo:( ).
