is 80C too hot for a video card?

With my door off... Far Cry can push my radeon 9800 non-pro over 80C, when measured by a thermal probe taped to the back of the chip dye... all of my pci slots are filled, but my smallest, my modem, is right next to the 98. How hot can these things go un-overclocked?

I'm wondering if im the only person to have this kind of problem, ive never been over 65C before on it until Far Cry...

Thats crazy. If your video card is that hot it is defective. It is heating up the rest of your components. My Nvidia cards recently owned do not get over 50° c

If it's stable, it's fine. The warning temp on an FX5900 is 140C, the 9800 shouldn't be too far off.

I'd be concerned with a temp that high but then again it could be normal.

You could try emailing ATi and/or posting at Rage3D to ask if this is normal behaviour.
