Is 78C load too hot?

I just bought HL2, and in the middle of playing HL1:S, it keeps crashing every once and a while, I couldn't figure out why. I am thinking it is perhaps a software problem, but I still like to keep an open mind.

Under full load, my GPU gets to 78C (overclocked to 435/1200). Is that too hot? My CPU is well within spec (55C, full load), but i'm not sure about the GPU . I can play Farcry, UT2k4 all day, Doom3, 3dMark runs fine, but its only HL:S that crashes. I have not tried HL2 yet. Because it runs every game but HL:S fine, I am thinking its software.

Is HL1 just buggy, or perhaps my GPU is running too hot? I think 78C is fine (espically since slowdown temps are in to 120C range), but I just want to see others opinions first.

Specs are...

Athlon2500+ @ 3200+
Abit NF7-S
Geforce 6800Ultra w/ GTU Bios w/ 71.84 WQHL drivers @ 435/1200
1gb PC3200
WinXP SP2 w/ all updates
It is the HL2 collectors edition on DVD.

Thanks.

I get 62 load with my NV silencer, with stock cooling I got 72 max load.

78 isnt bad.....

Its because of the overclock. The temps are fine I think. I get about 76-77 load when oced to ultra but no problems here

I get 89C full load with an overclocked 6800GT at Ultra levels. Granted, it probably doesn't have the equivalent cooling as the Ultra, but that will all change as soon as I can find an NV5 somewhere... Anyway, it could be worse ;)

Melting of what? Butter? Maybe you meant boiling point.
I've had two systems pne with a 6800gt the other in my sig.

Temp monitoring software on both had the cards running in the 90sC under load. Idle temps are in the low 50s. I've had no problems.

with my current system the GPU fan barely increases in speed as it hits the 90s.

Nvidia's spec is 120C before clock throttling kicks in, so it would seem that 78C is nothing to even start worrying about. I have load temps ~68C during winter but its getting warmer now. Leadtek told me that 85C or even higher at load is completely normal.

So I guess I don't have to worry about my passively cooled 6600GT hitting a max 68c. :) In the nVidia control panel core slow down is marked at 145c?!

Just wondering. I slightly modified my fan, so it wouldn't be as loud, so temps are a little bit higher than what they should be. It seems 78C is fine for the card. I wonder what the temps would have been without the mod... probally around 72-75C.

BFG10K: I do not think it is the overclock, no other applications have any problems. Doom3, 3DMark, AoM, UT2k4, or Farcry.I also feel that it is fine because the card can run stable at 440/1250. No symptoms of a too high of an overclock either, no artifacts, nothing, aside from HL:S crashing, there is an error message, but I forgot exactly what it said.

I was concerned if the temps were too high or not, and that might have been the cause for the crashing. Since it is well within spec, I guess its an application problem. However, I will try running it at factory speeds to see if it helps any.

Ok, I just confirmed it is not an overclock problem. I ran it at factory speeds, 425/1100, (its a BFG), and it still crashes. It crashes the game, but it is nearly impossible to alt tab. The mouse is functional, but the only real solution is to do a hard shutdown.

I think its a software problem.

Mine never goes above 70 load. It has an NV5 on it. Basically anything under 100 without artifacts is safe. nVidia's auto slowdown is very high...
