Is 7800GT overkill for my system?

Hi, I bought a Sempron 3400+ Compaq from Compusa for 125$ and am upgrading the video card but was wondering if the 7800GT is an overkill? Don't worry about the PS, as I have an Antec 400W (450W?) to supply my needs. I am receiving an X850XT pretty soon, but was wondering if it would be best to sell the card and get the 7800, but if I don't notice a difference, I don't want to waste money cause you know how it goes... COM (College Owns Me).

At the rate new GPU's are coming out (extremely fast) no, i don't think your rig would be too much for it. Actually you could likely upgrade the processor later to a 3700 Venice (or similar) if you needed a bit of a boost. Myself, i would stick with the X850XT and wait for DX10/Vista to take root then go for a DX10 class card with roughly the same speed as a 7800GT. Unless you really want SM 3.0 and faster frame rates right now than the X850XT will give you (which should be really nice up to 12x96 with aa-af- res).

Put a reserve on it just incase you dont sell at the right price. I personally would wait for DX10/Vista cards to come out before you upgrade your video card. the X850XT is more than enough for you at this point in time.

Totally depends on your resolution. Do you have a 15/17" LCD that limits you to 1024x768? X850XT.
Do you have a very nice CRT or a widescreen LCD that allows you 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 or even ~1640x960? I would get the 7800GT.
Do you have a very common 1280x1024 19" LCD - tossup

It's somewhere in the hotdeals section :). And yup, it's a Sempron 3400+ 939.

I have a 19" Samsung LCD with a max res of 1280x1024:(. I'm prob going to hand the LCD down to my mom and 2405 sometime in the future (don't need the 3xxx). Well, I guess my upgrade all depends on whether I can sell the X850XT for what I want.

I you're going to buy a 2405, I would get AT LEAST a 7800GT, and consider even more. That monitor has a lot of pixels to push and the resolution can't be lowered like a CRT (and still have perfect quality).

I did a search for it in hot deals and came up with nothing. Any help?
