Is 71C a bit excessive for a 6800gt?

mine is Oc'd to 400/1100 with fast-write disabled, and i hit 71 c playing kotor 2 today. Im kinda worried that kotor 2 was fing up because of those insane temps. Ive heard higher, and know the threshold is like 120c, but im kinda wary. Anyone?

think its worth it to purchase an nv5 silencer? You guys like em, installation easy?

Damn high temps no doubt. But perfectly normal. From what I'd read in reviews, an AC would help some.

Interesting how there are tons of choices in cpu coolers but only a couple of deceint choices for hot running gpu's.

71°C is reasonable. Not that I recommend this, but I've seen people running them fine at stock ultra speeds up to 90°C

I've read reviews about the NV5 silencer. It supposedly is quieter, and drops your case temperatures. But, your GPU will run a few degrees warmer.

We aren't talking about idle temperatures. The only time I've seen those temperatures under full load is with watercooling.

71 is not bad at all. Could be lower, but you are absolutely fine.

right now mine is idling at 52C with the case side on, not sure what the load temp is.

Mine idles at 51C on NV5 21C ambient in room. Hits 64-68 (depends on ambient) under rthdrbl and 62C in gaming

Is this with the nVidaia temp monitor? I am not sure I believe that so much. I also use speedfan 4.20 which tells me my Video card is 10c cooler than nvidia tells me. I have compared all the other temps on speedfan with the asus probe and they match. It just seems odd that speedfan would be off 10c on the video card and nothing else.

On my speedfan, it only reports the pcb temp of the card which is usually 10-14 degrees C lower than the core temp. I do not think Speed fan gives temp read outs for the gpu core atleast not on mine.

71C sounds about right on load... my idle before was 50C idle and 76 load noow i'm at 40C and 46C load with a DD maze4 gpu.

Hmm....yeah with my stupid BFG copper cooler I get 88C after playing HL2 for a while (which isn't TOO stressful, running @ 16x12 4xaa 8xAF)
I used to have a fan that screwed over the PCI expansion slots and blew air over my GT, I guess that helped 'cuz it was definitely cooler b4. Whenever I get to it tho, I will have an NV5 silencer in there w/AS5 & ASC loaded up on it. I'll let you know how much that helps ;)

Wow! GPUs run hot nowdays!. Everyone seem to be concerned about CPU temps, and a lot was said about Prescotts, but... 70ºC is waaaay hotter. 72ºC is the max. recommended temp. for my CPU.

Efficient WC should be appreciably lower at load. I'm running my GT at 415\1200 and I don't break 47c with any of the more demanding games I own (FC, D3, T:V, 2k4).

A GPU is not as critical as a CPU for stable operation. If your CPU gets too hot, it may result in your windows crash. This is because everything relies on the CPU even the operating system.

If the GPU gets too hot, the worst thing that can happen is that your game will crash. Not that it is acceptable. But, it is less catastrophic than a CPU. In reality, you can get artifacts that re not even visible at first. if you go to higher GPU temps, you will get visible artifacts. If you go even higher, you will get crashes to desktop.

The first time you get a error in the CPU, your prime95 will fail. You don't want any calculation your CPU does to fail.

I was hitting 71-73c under load before I put on my NV 5. Now my load is 62 with idle being the same as before (52-54c). I would not worry about those temps, theoretical threshold according to the software is 120c, though this does not seem correct.

The NV silencer had exact same temperatures as stock cooler. However it does draw out hot air and is silent. I can push past 78 C on both coolers by using "Real-Time High-Dynamic Range Image-Based Lighting" found here ( http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/ ). This nifty program will tax your GPU like a @#%^@er. Maybe my NV5 has issues because the core of the GPU does not naturally make contact with each other. I had to screw it tight so they can just touch.

If you want to see how hot your GPU can get, try ATItool and run "Scan for artifacts".

running atitool or rthdrbl gives me 60c and idles at 43c with nv silencer
