thanks but my memory doesnt have heatsinks that protrude upwards (just normal run-of-the-mill heatsinks that dont stick out). so i think im fine.:)

Well got my Thermaltake Frio today, installed it (man what a headache installing it is!!!), and used a small blob of Arctic Silver 5, not a big one.... max temps are now 57c!^^ thats a far cry from the 72c i was getting earlier with my Thermaltake Big typhoon (and even then i stopped the test as it was just too high!). In games i get max 45c, so it was def the heatsink as the issue! Thanks to everyone for your input!! now lets see how far we can push this 1100T!!!:)

*sigh* even w/ the Frio seems like i got a weak chip.:( it only does 3800mhz on 1.4vcore. No matter how hard i push it, it just wont be stable above that in P95 regardless of vcore. The cpu/nb did a more impressive 2800mhz @ 1.325, so i can live with that.:) I think my mobo is holding me back yea?(have latest bios but its a revision 1, this mobo has revision 2.1 out). Its a cheapo gigabye 770, but im hesitant to buy an AM3+ until i hear about Bulldozer's performance...

what do u guys think? its the ancient mobo or just the chip?

Probably not as weak as you think. Mine (1090T) only does 4.0GHz on 1.525Vcore, but also does 2.8GHz on the CPU-NB.

(I also accidentally discovered it can be stable at 4.2GHz under 1.6Vcore, but that's a different story altogether)

This won't make your chip magically better, but just sharing this as a way of saying "you aren't really unlucky - that's probably normal".

EDIT: Also a cheap, old Gigabyte board here - MA785GM-US2H

EDIT2: I would like to add that it won't be a good idea to buy an AM3+ from your AM2 board. The only reason I went with a Thuban was because I had it for a song, and it was a drop-in replacement for my Phenom II X4, and this mobo (and everything else in the computer) also housed an Athlon X2 7750 before the Phenom II, and some parts (like the RAM) also served an earlier processor, Athlon X2 5000+. In short, AM2/AM2+ was sort of "the gift that keeps on giving" for me. If I had to change platforms and spend real money (AM3, so DDR3), I would not have considered the Thuban and just went for an Intel system.

Any stores around you with liberally accommodating return policies that will let you effectively "buy and try" so as to help you determine which is the weakest link?

Personally I suspect it is the CPU. There is a reason after all that the chips are sold at 3GHz chips and not 4GHz chips.

That said, cheap mobo's are well known to be the rate limiting step when high current draw comes into play.

If I were in your shoes, recognizing we are two different individuals with differing amounts of patience and time for these things, I would let it be and wait for BD to come out before deciding my next move.
