65k is nicely comfortable for SoCal. I make 45k and it's a bit tight. That extra grand a month (after taxes) would just about make things nice.

<---bucking for a promotion that should get me that extra grand...

Salary comparison calculator.

Gives you an idea about the two locations. That particular calculator says that, if you make $65k in Wheaton, you need about $68k in LA for the same standard of living. Pretty close to the same thing as jinduy said.

According to that site I would need more money to move into a cheaper area with lower taxes and lower insurance rates.

I am not sure I belive it.

A lot of the people I know had to claw and whine to get a raise after the first 1-3 years - a raise of significance anyway ;)

65k sounds decent, but I've never been to socal.

if 65k wasn't enough to live in San Diego, do you think that many people would be living in San Diego? Especially without a car payment :)
edit: do you have a wife/so and/or kids? if so does your s/o work?

damn, that's a lot of income to be considered "enough"

here, i'd say $40k would be comfortable living. (Canadian too)

That calc is sooo right on too.... I lived in IL and TX, and it says 40k here only would need 33k there... and thats so the truth. Good god... for where Im at in IL to where Im going in GA... 40k here would need 28k there.

gah, how could you *not* live on 65K/year? I'm living a few miles outside of NYC on 30K/year fine, and San Diego has to be cheaper than NYC.

65k is good. i make it fine down here making considerably less. For 65k, you should be able to rent in a nice part of the city. But still try and save up and get a house or something if you plan to stay here awhile, with cost of living* constantly rising, you can turn that house purchase into a good investment in no time if you decide to sell, refi, or rent out. enjoy your stay, and welcome to my city. yes, you read right dammit, my city. :D

you make double what i make, and i live in LA, renting, sharing apartments, paying too much for car insurance, paying student loans, etc. you'll be FINE.

try getting by on 30k/year. it SUCKS. i wish i could make more money. bleah.

since you're making a decent amount, save up for a house if you are so inclined.

As a native San Diegan, still living in San Diego, there are vast differences in housing price depending on what sub community you choose.

To own a decent home in a decent location you'll need 2x that income -- a working spouse helps.

When you have K/12 school age kids, there are definately preferred communities with preferred schools.

Some places to go (not in any particular order):

1) Pacific Beach (near the Roller Coaster) on a hot summer weekend day...ooh la la.

2) Point Loma Light House...Good View.

3) Soledad Mtn. Summit (both at day and at night)...Great View...good war memorial.

4) Drive the Sunrise Highway...Visit Julian for an apple pie.

5) Hike (easy paved road) to Cuyamaca Peak...Great View.

6) Monty's Pub at San Diego State University on a hot day...again, Ooh la la.

7) La Jolla Cove / La Jolla Shores beach.

8) Torry Pines State Park...cool day hike trails...good view.

Heya Kal, its your Wheaton neighbor.

Good luck with moving. Wheaton is an expensive area to live in, so I'm guessing Cali won't be too much more. My wife and I are ditching AMLI soon. Rent is way too high for what we get. Moving over to naperville (2 miles).

What job are you working currently? Lucent wireless stuff? I think we talked about it but I forget.

That damm thing doesn't make any sense.
It tells me I would need $7 a year to move from Orlando, Fl to Sacramento and thats for rent.
For housing its $2000 more a yr.
Considering Cali has a state income tax, its very inaccurate.
