is 64bit pci backwards compatible?

i was looking at a Tyan Tiger daully for a new rig, but it has 2 regular (32bit) pci slots and 4 big (64bit) pci slots. just from looking at a pic of the board (i had never actually looked at a 64bit pci slot before), it kinda looks like a regular pci card could fit/work in those slots, but i have no clue if there's any real possibility of that.

i'm kinda new to big rigs, especially stuff like 64bit pci's, heh. so, if this is a remedial question, sorry. bear with me as i learn
🙂

thanks, lates,

33mhz 64bit PCI is backwards compatible. 5.0V

64bit 66mhz PCI is not. It's 3.3V I believe. It's also keyed differently so you can
t physically stick in a 5V card.

Fandu, some 33MHz 32bit PCI cards are 3.3 volts too. They have an extra notch cut in the connector towards the front of the card.

so, a good bet is, if i can fit the card in there, it's compatible. otherwise, the ppl are smart enough to make it so that if theyre not compatible, i won't physically be able to insert the wrong card?

That's the idea. But I wouldn't go just by that, at least try and find out if the card is compatible first.
