Is $60k good for an IT Manager in Raleigh, NC?

I've been watching NC evern since this thread, but they ended up filling the position internally. People tell me that North Carolina is a very nice place to live - nice people, good weather, and tech is high in demand.

I just found a job listing for what I think is a software company, they want a hands on IT Manager to manage three other IT people. All of the systems they want experience with, I have, matching almost perfectly. The real estate in that area looks reasonably priced but I just came across another thread saying that NC has the highest gas prices in the U.S., so I still don't know what to expect.

NC does NOT have the highest gas prices in the U.S. LMAO at that statement!

Come on down, the more the merrier in NC!

60k in NC might be okay, but in the NJ/NYC area I'd look for 85k+ for that type of a position.

I am actually going to do a phone interview today for a position very similar to what you mentioned.

gas is def. more expensive in RTP when compared to michigan. i've been down in the raleigh area for the past 4 or 5 weekends for office visits and noticed that gas is always 10-15 cents higher than it is in ann arbor, MI

I'm going to be making around 55k in raleigh so I can't tell if it's good or bad. I only have student loans to pay off at this point because I will be graduating from college. At least housing is damn cheap and pretty nice communities.

That's about right for that kind of position in Raleigh.

It may be right... but is it good? I'm from PA, where IT jobs are sparse and horribly paid.

I'm in Durham, NC and $60K is not that great. I'm a Java software developer ~8 years experience and make more than that. Housing around here is getting bad, but definitely not Atlanta or California bad. Around $150K will get a smallish 3BR/2BA house depending on where you live. Cary is more expensive as is Chapel Hill. Some part of Raleigh are ok and Durham for the most part is cheaper than all of those. Of course you have to contend with the stigma of living in Durham, but along the outskirts it's not a bad place at all. I love where I live since I'm only 2 minutes away from work.

man this is funny, i lived in NC most of my years and i couldnt find a damn job in IT....
yeah i dont have alot of work experience but still.

had to move to FL(i hate tampa and Verizon!!!) to take some crappy IT job and now im in nor-cal...

but yeah if you have a family and kids i'd say move to NC, great place to settle down...

60k is low for a job like that.. I mean, the people that you are managing should be the ones making 60k around that area.

How long ago did you live there? Maybe the IT growth is just recent. Was it that you couldn't find an IT job, or that you just weren't getting hired into IT?

actually raleigh is so cheap that i think it's a good price. my friend just built a very nice house down there in apex for something like 150k

The IT culture is very strong in NC, especially in the Research Triangle Park. The cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill which contains the NC State, Duke, and UNC CHapel Hill universities make up the "triangle" and has had a long tradition of IT and medical research and development. If you were trying to find an IT job post-bubble (2000-2002), then yeah, it was probably pretty tough. But IT is definitely picking back up again in this area. I decided to leave my previous software development job in January of this year, and had several interviews and job offers. I took the best one at the beginning of February. In one month I was able to leave a job and take a better one.

Damn, I sound like a marketing executive. Maybe IT is the wrong profession for me?

Finally managed to check in with some friends who worked in NC's Research Triangle Park for a few years now in high tech. I'm told $60k is pretty good for an IT manager in the area, so give it a shot.

Thanks sully. 🙂 The housing also looks affordable so I did send them my resume. We'll see what happens....

The toughest part of all this is getting my wife to feel comfortable with a move like this.
