Is 56 C too hot for a p3 while running UT?? Just what are the 'safe' ranges for p3 anyway??

I've heard that Intel themselves mention that 50C-70C is ok.

Can anyone confirm this?

Opinions and knowledge are always welcome ;)

(this is a p3 650 o/c to 847,fsb 130, native 1.65 v 1...slot 1 on a P3V4X mobo, with a Gorb and radioshack paste)

i wouldn't want it above 50 myself. if you can do anything else(like use higher quality grease) i would

I personally would want to cool that a little more - especially for a chip running at around the 800Mhz mark and using only default voltage still.

I have a Slot 1 600@800 with an Alpha P3125S and its only hits 37/38C at full load.

I like to keep my CPUs at about 40C or under.

Are you using any case fans?

its okay, but For a p3 at your overclock with a gorb to be that high means your case is pretty warm.

I'd work on case cooling a bit.

An Intel tech was saying in one of the other forums at the Pentium IIIs are rated to last seven years at 80c. Made me feel a bit better. My P650 runs at idle 34c and full 48c. Its not my case that's warming up the pentium...the case is 24c. If the guy from Intel is right, not much point is blowing money on fancy cooling.

They're rated that high, but they don't often want to overclock much when they run that hot, hence the need for better cooling when overclocking.

that gorb should be doing a better job cooling that chip which makes me wonder if your radioshack paste has dried up. A higher quality thermal transfer compound like arctic silver may make a significant difference in cpu temperature.
then again, your readings temperature could be incorrect!

WOW! Thanks so much guys for all your responses and thoughts:D

That's what I love about these forums.

I do have case cooling via 2 fans, and at the moment, just doing this, browsing, email and such, it's running at a "cool" 35 C and the mobo temp is 32 C. (according to Motherboard Monitor 5)

It always starts out ok, but then gradually and slowly heats up over time, regardless of what I'm doing. This leads me to believe that my cooling isn't the best. From my experience and what I've read online, the GORB for slot 1 isn't so good, and that I'd need something stronger (VOS32, Alpha...despite the helicopter ;)

Can anyone comment on this?

I think I will need better grease, and that artic silver seems to be my next option (anyone have extras for * nice sale* for a fellow anandtecher ;)

I've just gotten a GlobWIN VOS 32 cooler, but it's damn huge and will block one ram slot on this Asus (P3V4X).

Many, many thanks again guys for all your responses

Cheers :)

Is your motherboard temp staying more or less constant or does that creep up too?

Efficient case cooling will raise a few degrees quickly from bootup but then stay constant, unless the room temp itself increases.

If the case is heating up too much then maybe you are not exhausting air from it efficiently.

This would definitely affect your CPU temp.

Just a thought.
