Is $550 a decent price for a 2 week old Dell 2005FPW?

Someone on Craigslist in my hometown is selling his 2005FPW which he says has no dead pixels or problems for $550. Dell's site just started selling them for $560 plus shipping (and I don't know if they'd charge tax), so the used deal isn't that big of a difference price-wise, but it sounds like quite a few people are having problems with dead pixels and bad backlights on these things. Not really something I'd want to go through.

Is this screen worth that kind of price? I know deals come around from time to time where they go for under $500, but the biggest thing I'd be paying for is assurance that everything works from the begining. I've got a pretty decent 19" CRT at the moment, and it has great IQ, but it takes up a lot of desk space.

Anandtech always describes this thing as the 900lb gorilla of LCDs, but as a longtime fan of CRTs, will there be any noticeable differences in IQ? I know it's supposed to have low response time, but doesn't that sacrifice color representation? No monitor is worth it to me if it's got a noticeably lower color range. Basically are there any gotchas with this one thatI should be aware of? If anybody's got this LCD, I'd love to hear how they like it, especially compared to a CRT.

Thanks

$550 is not really a great price. You can often get it for below $500 new through Dell, you just have to keep an eye out for the sales.

I have the monitor (got it in January) and I love it. I came from a 22" NEC CRT (FP2141SB-BK) before, so I know what high-end CRT's can do as well. The color reproduction is great (this is not one of the 6bit/18bit panels, it's a true 24 bit panel). The response times are impressive as well - there is minimal "ghosting"/motion blur. Some people don't notice it at all, some people do. It's not nearly enough to bother me or make me want to ditch the monitor, although CRT's still obviously do better in that area. If you have any backlight or dead pixel problems with your monitor (ordering it through Dell), you can get it replaced, no questions asked. And from what I read, the latest A02 revision has very few problems with this anyway.

I hope this helps. 🙂

I got mine for $346 plus tax new from Dell. 3yr warranty.

I would wait for end of the quarter sale in June-July. I bet it'll be even be cheaper then.

Cool. Thanks for the replies. If the newer revisions have fewer problems, and they're likely to go on sale soon, then I don't see any reason to go with this one. I'm plenty happy with the monitor I've got for the time being. While saving the space would be great, I can certainly go without until a better deal comes along. Until then, I suppose I'll be watching the sales. 🙂

Check the coupon sites. Dell Small Business has a 40% off coupn in effect right now that drops the price to $449. It will likely go lower when the back to school sales kick in.
