Is $55 for tire rotation reasonable?

@ Goodyear in Maryland, they offer free balancing with an oil change. So naturally I added the rotation too. My bill was over $100 with tax (oil change was only $42). Turns out the rotation was $55 on the bill. Is this a bait and switch? Walmart's website lists tire rotation @2.50 per tire. What do you think?

It's overpriced, IMO. Place like Pepboys even do it for free if you are a member of the rewards program.

Well, did they at least include a lube job in the bill? Yikes...that's horrible.

Around here $15-$20 is much more common for a rotation with a $25-$30 oil change. So $40-$50 for the two.

did they give you a bottle of KY Jelly afterwards and say "sorry, we forgot to use this"?

your car came with all the tools you need to rotate your tires yourself. if it's a nice day outside just do that.

otherwise it shouldn't cost more than $10.

your oil change was also a rip unless they did it in 20 minutes or less.

My experience with Goodyear has always been horrible, I will never use them again, and this was 3 different locations in 3 different parts of the country.

That's a ripoff, as ElFenix said you can do it yourself in less than 30 minutes even if you've never done it before. If getting your hands dirty and 30 minutes of your time is worth $55, no worries.

Yea that was a rip.

They have to take the tires off to balance them anyways so all they did was move them around before reinstalling.

But most national chains are rip-offs in my experience. i.e. firestone, goodyear, etc…

Call them up and ask how much to rotate. If the price is much lowwer go back and ask for a refund.

So you got a free tire balance, by doing which they more than likely had to remove the tires anyway.

So essentially they charged you 55 bucks to reinstall them in a different location. What a deal. [/sarcasm]

Odd, Goodyear around here has always done tire rotation for free. I go to a local shop called Big Brand Tires, they do it for free.

Edit: Goodyear here also fixes flat tires for free.

I can see paying $55 for a rotation if they have remount the tire - in the case where you have directional tires of different sizes from front to back.

What's odd is that they offered free balancing. In my experience, it's rotation that's usually 'free.' But yah, charging for rotation if balancing is being done is a complete rip-off. Actually, it's kind of hilarious (sorry!)

What Pantoot is saying, and makes sense, is directional tires can’t be moved on many cars now. So the only way to rotate is to take off the rim and move the tire from one side to another so they are still rotating in the correct direction.

i.e. my Corvette has different rims in the front and rear and also directional tires. The only way to rotate them is to remove them from the rim and move left to right and right to left side.

i live in cali and around here that seems around the average. Where i go its 10 bucks a tire. But i have seen other places go for $50-70 that's crazy maybe they rebalanced and change leaking valve stems??

10 dollars each to mount and balance a tire is standard.
40 dollars for rotating should be the max anywhere, and thats extreme.
Also, the service of changing oil should never be more than 20 bucks. Its an easy job. Gravity does most of the work.

Paid $37 for Oil Change/Tire rotation at Belle Tire. All 4 tires are the same.

Never paid more than about $40 for the two so I'd say you got ripped off, unless you have the special circumstance mentioned above.

What the shit. I get full synthetic on a 6.0 and a filter for $50. A rotation for $20.

And this is a dealer!

Well, to their credit they did say they didn't charge me because I "had enough tread on the tires already in the front" /confused because I've never gotten a rotation on these tires since I've had them (25K miles?). Maybe they read this thread, lmao.

They did give me a laundry list of other things that "need to be done soon" which I already knew about. Nothing critical of course.

The oil change was 42 because it's high mileage oil. I just said ok because it came with the free balancing which is always good to have. Checked on Walmart's site and it's $40 for a high mileage oil change so not upset about that.

And nope, my car doesn't have different rims, all the same.

I looked on Walmart's site and it's $2.50 per tire to rotate. So unless Goodyear's mechanics are making a lot more than other ones (i.e. super high labor rates), it seems like they're gouging and suckering people in with the "free balancing deal with oil change" and overcharging on the rotation.

Bingo.

My first negative experience with a Goodyear store was when I bought one of those coupon books from a neighborhood kid who was raising money. When I tried to redeem the "free oil change" coupon, they wanted to charge me $30 for my "special" oil filter. I kindly told them to engage in an act of self-fornication and never went back to that place.
