Is 50C too hot for an AMD64 with no load and not OCed?

Would too much thermal compound cause that? If so, how do I clean the CPU, and how much should I re-apply?

Thanks.

50c is fine

Remove paste using mineral spirits, followed by alcohol (you can try just alcohol)

Very very thin layer, just barely covering the surface.

How long has it been running? Give it a couple weeks to burn in before worrying too much about the temps.

I put this rig together Oct. 04
I'm asking, because I'm changing the PSU to a Seasonic s12 430W this week. Might as well kill two birds with one stone.

50C is fine, but for an UnOC'd chip it's a lil hot IMO. I have a OC'd 3500+ newcastle core that's 35C idle.

Is this a mobo reading? Try updating your BIOS in case the board is currently misreporting the temperature.

I haven't updated the bios yet. I'll try that tonight.

If you're wondering, I have:

DFI LanParty NF3 250gb mobo
AMD64 3000+ proc
1gig PDP 2-3-2-5

I apologize for my ignorance, but where can I buy mineral spirits?

I get just about the same readings with my 3400+ on that same board, i think ur fine

BTW, i just used alcohol and it came off real nice!

Well, I just changed out my PSU from a Thermaltake Purepower 480W to a Seasonic S12 430W, and my CPU idle temp dropped to 44C t0 47C. That's good news.

The bad news is that my pc is still loud!

Yeah that seeed to be a bit warm. When I had air cooling I was in the high 30's when not oc'd. The A64's run cool.

That's pretty high. Back when I had stock cooling, it idled at stock around 35-38. Now that I have an XP-90, it idles around there, but it's also overclocked to 2.4.

Thanks. I'll probably pull out everything and reapply the paste. It's just a hassle since I have to pull out the whole rig since I have the Zalman CPU cooler on it. I guess it'll be good in the long run. If it were a couple degrees off, I wouldn't care. But 10-15 degrees is a bit extreme.

Thanks guys.

I was getting pretty excited last night when the DFI nF4 Ultra-D board I just installed with a Winchester 3500+ was showing a CPU temp of 44C idle (stock cooling + AS5). The problem.....Everest was reading the wrong sensors. Once I installed DFI's ITE utility, the CPU temp showed the correct 29C idle. Needless to say it was a major relief, and I won't be using Everest for temp checks on this board....

m 🙂

I think it's too high.

I have an overclocked 3200+ @ 2.5GHz (Winchester Core though), and my idle temp is only 29c. No fancy cooling either, only a Zalman 7000b at the lowest fan setting

im running 31c with my Athlon64 3000+ and im only using a Gigabyte 3dcooler rocket. but then again i just set this rig up today but i am happy with it so far... now if i can just get my video card to keep up 🙂
