Another thing to consider is that new ATX 3.0 power supplies are probably coming out now and/or right around the corner. This is the first real change in PSU standard in almost 20 years. The added bonus is that it calls out the very item I have been mentioning, and actually accounting for and handling a 3x power spike from the GPU for 100 microseconds on the new GPU connectors. The new GPU connectors are also to be labeled (or at least listed in documentation) the GPU power they are rated for (so for example a 1200W PSU may have a GPU connector rated for 600W, which would need to be able to spike to 1800W for 100 microseconds handled via capacitors. This also goes for smaller PSUs that might only support a 250W GPU, 300W GPU, 450W GPU, etc.)
