I'm planning to get:

Asus p5k
Intel Q6600 G0 stepping
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 320 meg (possibly 640m if it falls to 300 shipped).
porbably a pci sound card eventually (SB is making me angry since the audigy 2 crapped out on me)
i have 1 DVD drive for now and 1 hard drive, but could possibly get a new hard drive (sata)
and keep the old IDE for backup purposes.. so figure in maybe 2 dvd drives 2 hard drives..

will 500 be enough?

I want one with an LED fan to light my case (i know geeky)....

I was looking at a roswell on newegg cuz its sale for like 47.99
Rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2SB ATX V2.2 500W Power Supply 115/230 V V UL

But maybe there's somethign better? I'm all for spending 40-60, 100's a little high but i could do it if its definately worth it.. The roswell doesnt seem to have a rear vent fan? only
a bottom fan?

Also is better to have 120mm instead of 80mm? the case i got has 120's so maybe it will be quieter to have all 120's?

With those specs you are goign to be looking at a PSU that will cost about $100. No way around that. Don't go with that Rosewill. They are very poor PSUs and don't have the power to support your system.

Now its not the wattage of the PSu you need to be looking at. Rather you need to be awair of the amount of amperage your system will need and what the PSU is able to offer from the +12v rails.
This article will help you understand what you need to know when looking for a good PSU.

http://www.xcpus.com/forums/ca...ide-psu-101-102-a.html

You system will need a PSu that can offer about 32A or better on the +12v rails. Here is a listing of good PSUs that will help you find a PSU to suit your system.

http://www.xcpus.com/forums/ca...su-reference-list.html

Hope that helps.

BTW most good quality PSU that would be good for your system will not come with an LED fan in them. But its not that hard to change out the fans inside the PSU so long as your not worried about the warrenty.

Read the first link i gave you. Its all exsplaind in there. If its still not clear i'll be happy to try and exsplain it better for you. Unfortunatly the OCZ PSU don't give you the information you need to figure out the actuall max amperage for the +12v rails. You would be better off with anotehr PSU like on of the Corsair units.

I'd go with a Seasonic 500 Watt +

If you are looking to cheap out, I'd go with Xion. I run a 500 Watt Xion PowerReal, and it works fine for me. Friend of mine has a 600 watt Xion powering his Core 2 Duo, and 8800 GTS with no problems. If you got the dough, and want the piece of mind you can't go wrong with Seasonic or Enermax.

it says it has 18amps on like 12v1 , then 18 amps on 12v2 and so on, i'm confused, do those 12v's not add up? it goes all the way up to 12v4, if they ad up thats like 60amps total.. but i'm sure you'll tell me they dont add up :(

Here's JonnyGURU's review of the GameXstream 700W. Both the 600W & 700W are based on the FSP Epsilon. If you look closely at the label on the psu it states "max combines 12V output is 50A".

Note how the "680W" for the combined maximum 12V rating notches into the combined maximum rating for the 3.3V and 5V rails. This is because the 12V rails alone are capable of putting out 680W, but any load that is on the 3.3V and 5V load will need a part of that. It's sort of deceiving since the GameXstream 700W does not have independent regulation and a minimum load is required for the 3.3V and 5V in order to keep the 12V within spec.

The 600W has 580W combined on the 3.3, 5V, 12V rails. Taking the above info into consideration it probably has ~42A combined on the 12V rails. According to Jonny's review, when you load up the psu the ripple goes out of spec. :( Regardless, it's still a high quality psu and on his Tier 4 recommended list.

IS that to say that the 600w might work okay for me? i'm not wild about spending 109 bucks neccessarily but if its adaquette for what i want, i think it might be worth it.

and max combined 50A is well above the recommended 32amp that mpil stated earlier in the thread.. so thats a good thing as far as i can see?
(tho i'm not quite sure, does this psu have the molex connector for my older ide hard drive? I'm not quite on sata yet).

I went ahead and pucrhased the 700w version off cheifvalue for just about 95 shipped after rebates and such.. i figured i was too good of a deal to pass up and the review you guys posted as well as another random one that i found on legitreviews.com seemed to point to the 700w ocx gamer being a very solid performer and probably exactly what i am looking for in a PSU..

Let me know if you think i made a good choice :)

In my Acer E700 I'm running the following:
Q6600
4x1GB sticks
4x500GB HDDs
8800GTS/320
1xDVDRW
Hauppauge PVR-500 dual tv tuner card

....with the stock 300W PSU. And there are several others who've since bought the E700s and have put in similar cards (I've read of 8600GTSs and 8800GTS/320s). No issues.

Don't believe the hype about needing huge PSUs. Read Anandtech's (and others') reports on actual power used, under heavy gaming load, with the 8800 series. Typical with a GTS is around 200-250W, and with GTX around 250-300W. :)
