what i know is 480i has vertical lines while 480p has horizontal.

What? You dont know what youre talking about. Interlaced is a signal that writes alternate lines of video on alternate frames. This cuts your resolution in half, spatially and temporally. Progressive writes all lines on every frame.
There's a ton of reasons why. Here's a few...
Interlace flicker is gone.
No "combing". This is during fast action or horizontal pans it looks like a comb is being run over the picture.

Name one piece of technology thats different.
To be fair audio/video has been pretty stagnant since the VCR. DVD broke through that and still holds the record for consumer adoption.
Enter high definition. I knew 7 years ago that I was going to get HD as soon as possible when I saw it and I did.
The advancements in display technology in just the last 5 years is simply mind blowing. Give it another 5 years and we really will have the full wall TVs just like demolition man.

for the wii, apparently it makes a huge difference. i, for one will definitely be getting the component cables when i pick up my wii next weekend.
