Is $425 a good price for a 580GTX 3GB right now?

I can get a 580 GTX 3GB today with a warranty for $425. (local shop)

Is that still a good deal for 2560x1600 gaming with the 7970 coming?

post the card first on fleabay and see what kind of bids you get. $500 + is reasonable at current prices, though with 7970 coming out there will be significant downward pressure on gtx 580 price in the coming months.

Exactly, why I'd buy now and flip it before the expected price cuts show up.

Say you sell it for $525, $100 in your pocket and before 7970 launches it gets a price cut to $500 with rebates, GTX 580 3GB for $350 anyone? Sign me up!

Now way will he sell that card for 525 used right now. I've seen plenty of 3GBs floating around for low 400's. The 1.5GBs are barely commanding 400 anymore.

Buy the card and keep it it will be a good upgrade.

With the 7970 about 2 weeks from hitting stores that $525 your hoping to get will be more then unlikely for $25 more people will choose a highly overclockable 7970 with lower power consumption.

If you buy it and resell it for $525 to someone make sure to punch that person in the side of the head when the sell is over.

The GTX 580 performs well against the 7970 in BF3, which also isn't available yet. And I have to mention, if you plan on playing a physX game like Batman, you get the extra eye candy. If those 2 games mean little to you, the extra 125-150.00 for a general faster card +/- 25%(7970) is a good option.

$425 is a fair price for a GTX 580, 3GB or otherwise, but don't expect to be able to buy this card and flip it for a profit. This is pretty easy to determine by going to ebay and looking up completed listings for GTX 580. To make enough to make the flip worth while after ebay/paypal fees, you need to either have a special edition of the card (watercooled, Classified, etc) or be willing to ship internationally (which, after 10 yrs on ebay I just don't do - not even Canada). IMO, it sounds like too much of a pain to buy it with the intention of flipping, but it's a decent price if you just want a GTX 580.

edit: FWIW, I sold mine and I'm probably going to pick up a 7970 in Jan.

I'd do it, if I were in the market for an apex card.

I think there's at least a fair chance there will be price gouging upon 7970's release. Newegg in particular is known for it.

Seems like the worst time to be buying 580s but a 3GB model for $425? That's pretty damn reasonable, I'd do it.

Even if the 580 plummets to $400 (with the 3GB models at $425-450) you're no worse off, and there's no guarantee if/when that'll happen.
