American automakers believe that when it comes to increasing fuel economy, raising the standards to 35mpgby2020 just can't be done. But, as members of the American auto industry, we have designed, built and sold automobiles in this country for decades, and we know it can!

Join me, Adam Lee, of Lee Auto Malls, and other auto industry members as we call on Congress to increase CAFE standards to 35mpgby2020. For twenty years, fuel economy has been allowed to stagnate, increasing America's oil dependence and undermining the economic vitality of the domestic auto industry. It's time to move the auto industry forward, not backwards.

He calls 35mpg moving forward?? European cars have been doing more miles per gallon than that for years already! Just copy their bloody technology and hope people do not notice!

European cars don't get 35mpg because of technology, but because they are small.

European cars aren't necessarily small because of altruism, but because gas is expensive over there.

No, it's because of the diesel technology.

Mercedes, BMW and Audi have medium and large sized cars too, but are still far less fuel consuming than US cars. And gas is indeed extremely expensive here compared to the US.

If it was a fake site I'd be attacked if I had posted it in P&N :p

And you know it's not P&N because no one has tried blaming Clinton or Bush yet ;)

I thought it was odd to that there were no flaming torches or pitchforks at the door either.

For American economy 35mph would be a good short term goal say 5 years but all our SUV loving freaks would be upset. I mean who the hell can tell them they can't drive a 15,000 ton vehicle that can pass as an aircraft carrier in small countires. Seriously.

No, it's because of the diesel technology.

and because an imperial gallon is bigger than an american gallon which sometimes makes their smug rather absurd.

Except for most of Europe using the litre rather than the gallon (and kilometres instead of miles), and therefor us converting them for comparison first :D
The English are strange anyway, with their gallons, inches, feet, miles and other weird measuring units :D

The voice of reason people. Listen up. No need to get your panties in a wad.
I would add that besides smaller, a lot of European cars are built lighter. They would not meet crash standards here in the US. We have a lot of regulations here that influence our market.
