Is 3200 calories/day enough for me to gain?

Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 140 lbs
Work: Office Work
Activities: Working out, dancing, swimming

Details: Most days I go to work and sit around all day. In the evenings, I typically either go to the gym, go swimming, or go dancing. On the weekends, I bum around with the girlfriend.

I've tried to gain weight before without luck -- but I made mistakes. I didn't eat often enough. I didn't even eat ENOUGH at all.

I plugged my "stats" into a calorie calculator and it came up with about 3200 cal/day for me to gain one pound a week.

Does this seem "about right" to those of you with more experience?

(This is spread out between 5 meals in a day, with lots of protein, nutrients, etc. -- I even bought flax seeds =))

f0ck me your light!

My mate is 6'1 and only 156lbs but he is RIPPED but skinny...he struggles to gain mass as he doing marathon training...

Looks about right. You should be able to notice a difference in the first 1-2 weeks. If not increase your daily calories by 500calories.

Make sure you weigh yourself roughly the same time in the morning after going to the toilet. This is your 'true' weight. Anything else is added weight through water or food.

Thanks. Do you know how long it takes to build muscle after one workout?

I know you need nutrients right away and everything. But my "logical" brain always said that I should be able to see results very soon, or not at all -- I mean, my muscles aren't going to grow a week after I exercised them, right?

I was about that size when I graduated high school. After junior year of college I finally decided to get serious about putting weight on. While I was lifting heavy I averaged about 4,000 calories a day. In a little over a year I gained 25 lbs of mostly muscle.

Depending on if you work your legs at least 2x a week you can get noticeable results within 4-6 weeks. I always get results if I focus in 4-6 weeks when I put on size. I primarily don't train for size though and under eat to keep my weight down. Cutting is not fun!

How old are you also? This will effect your ability to pack on muscle.

If you're getting any considerable workout in almost every day.. working up a sweat for an hour or more.. 3200 calories is barely going to put weight on. I workout like 1-2 hours a day, and I need to eat about 5000 calories before I see anything. I'm a bit bigger than you so I may burn a few more calories just moving about, but it's not that much.

6' and 140 lbs you have to have a tapeworm. Where did you get it and can you order one over the internet. You probably need closer to 4200 cal/day. but you have to be carefull not to undercut your carbs. Probably better 40% prot 40% carbs and 20% fats so that you dont maintain a catabolic state and can both build muscle and keep from being ketotic. Get some diabetic urine strips from the pharmacy and monitor you urine if ketones are present you will not gain or build much muscle.

You've got to adjust your macros for building mass.

Protein will be your building block, lot's of it. Chicken, Turkey, Salmon (canned), beans (canned), nuts, and a few shakes.

Lift heavy and hard 4 days a week with a decent split and you'll build muscle fast!

Goodluck!

Start with that, but track your weight first thing each morning, and track everything you eat on Fitday

If you have not gained a pound after a week, up your daily total by 200-300 cals and eat that amount for the next week. Repeat this process until you are consistently gaining about a pound per week.
