I have a Computer & Info Science degree already, but I am interested in going back and earning an Electrical Engineering degree.

Is 30 years old too old to do this? i.e. will I get weird looks from the 18-22 yr olds?

No problem at all, just don't be one of those annoying older people who ask waay to many questions to get in good favor with the teacher.

Kinda, but I've always been somewhat self-conscious.

Did any of you have older adults that took classes with you when you were attending college?

You will get weird looks but not because of your age.
As for the other issue, yes. Go back.
I'm 27 and never had any college. Looks like I'll complete my degree when I'm 30 or 31.

I feel pretty good about it.
By getting into the workforce after highschool I have a huge edge on the kiddies because employers care much more about experience than school.
And I have a slight edge on the grown-ups because my degree will be much more recent.
Boss already told me as soon as I have the degree I can ask for 5-10 thousand more and not even need a promotion.

I took a class here at the U I work at and it was weird at first but noone cares at all. They assume you are either finishing something up or just there for the heck of it. I came directly from work so I was dressed nice every day as opposed to the things college kids wear. Thats how I stood out but I didnt care after a few weeks into it.

Just don't be one of those a-holes who feels the need to enlighten the whole class by relating the lesson of the day to a project he worked on while in the "real world." I always hated those guys.

I went back as a junior at age 33 and not only did the younger students not give me wierd looks, they mostly admired me and found me interesting. It was a very good experience and I'm glad I did it.

Who cares what a bunch of engineering dorks think anyway? :p

In all seriousness, my mom started law school when she was 35, and went to a highly successful legal career - she just retired after being a judge for 22 years. I know that isn't directly related to your situation, but it's always been a reminder to me that it's never too late to make a change to your life if that's what you want.

Usually the older people in my EE courses could help us dummies out b/c they already had an engineering degree.

Some people can do it with success, but I find those people are almost always going into a degree that doesn't use much prior knowledge - law for example. About half of the people I know who went back to school for something like that made it through.

Those who go back and enter science, math, and engineering tend to have a VERY difficult time. I think I've watched about 20 people go back into engineering and not one has made it more than a year. That is because those classes use knowledge and techniques which you haven't seen or used in a dozen years. While it is second nature to the 18 year olds taking the class, the 30 year olds struggle immensely just due to the time difference and the brain difference (your brain isn't in learning mode anymore and you have become addicted to having your evenings free). Yes, it can be done. But you must realize that it'll be 100 times harder than you think it will be.

I went back to law school at 28. I think past work/life exposures help in understanding certain legal functions and doctrines. I didn't feel too old since the average age was about 25. I think most law schools in this area prefer some prior professional experience.

Yes there were plenty of them in school. Just don't be the old guy that always has something to contribute to the professor's lectures. If you do this you should be fine.

I'm 42 and just applied for a masters program at LSU. I took my GRE yesterday. It's never too late.
