Is 2megs a normal wireless xfer speed?

Greetings,

I'm really new to the world of networking. Have been able to figure out how to do most of what I want on my own. Setup homegroup, setup file sharing and permissions etc but I don't know why my xfer speeds aren't too fast, or if this is normal. When xfering files from one computer that's directly connected to the router and another computer that's wireless I get a xfer speed of around 2 megabytes a second. Is that normal or should it be faster? Both computers are using Windows 7 64 bit. Below are links to what I have.

GIGABYTE GN-WP01GS IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Adapter Up to 54Mbps

NETGEAR WGR614 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Router

So I'm just wondering is my speed normal? Would using different software on my router help out? Maybe flying tomatos?

That's pretty much what you'll get with wireless-G. I don't know if I've ever seen a peak >2.4MB/s, and sustained is generally 2.0-2.2MB/s (this is using FTP).

That's about right. You may be able to bump it up slightly if you make the wireless network a g-only network, but don't expect much.

wireless rule of thumb: make sure your nic and router use the same chipset. for every router chipset there is a matching nic/usb chipset - usually - made around the same time.

atheros to broadcom = not good.

this gets far worst with 802.11N :(
