Is 256MB good enough for Windows 98?

I was wondering if I would see a big performance increase if I went to 512 MB.

even 128mb is enough for win98 (that is not considering any extra software usage..photoshop.. etc)

Hell Yeah! unless of course you are running a shed load of apps that are heavy on the memory. I would only start going to 512mb for 2000 Pro or XP. 256mb is good for those though.

Well, if you're doing anything heavy-duty like Photoshop or 3dsmax on Windows 98, you seriously need to consider an OS upgrade along with a RAM upgrade.

I have found that 256 is really the maximum for Win98 to run efficiently. It can run 512, but the extra low-level resources needed to manage all that extended memory and swap space just slow it down. (It's still just DOS underneath after all...)

Yep, 256 should be sweet. 512 shouldn't be needed...I remember running my P2-400 on 128 and Win98 ran just fine. As a matter of fact, Win2k did fine too.

Medellon, I agree w/ everyone who has posted so far, 256MB's of RAM is the sweet spot when running Win 98. THe max, depending on what applications you are using that are memory hungry should be 512MB's of RAM. Anything over 512MB's of RAM will only degrade performance, hope this helps :)

The REAL question is not if 256MB is good enough for Windows 98, its "is windows 98 good enough for my 256MB of ram...."

I would like to upgrade my OS but this is a 2nd PC used for surfing and gaming and since everything runs fine in 98, I don't feel the need to spend $100 to upgrade to XP.
