Is 256GB SSD Enough?

I am building a computer for my grandparents (96 years old). They dont really store a lot of stuff on it, as their computer only has 165GB of 320GB used (had it since 2011) . Is a 256GB SSD (Crucial MX100) enough, or should I go with a 120GB SSD and a 1TB Hard Drive? I think the 256GB is enough...

only you can answer that not us. this is like asking someone would one burger or two be enough for me? it all depends on their storage needs and our opinion won't really matter.

If they are content with 128 GB - 300 GB currently then degfinitely.

Bear in mind, that to get a sustained good performance on an SSD it is best to Overprovision them by 10-20% (I OPed both my 1TB Samsung 840 EVOs by 10% only as that's what Samsung recommends although reviews online indicate a 20-25% OP is best). That means that the actual space usable would be less. That is IF you want to maintain the good performance as you first got them over the long run. The unpartitioned OP space would be used for garbage collection by TRIM

Added OP will be minimally useful to most people, just using Windows 7 or newer will give TRIM, and the backed-into-a-corner performance of the MX100 isn't all that bad.

A 256GB (10^9) drive has 238GiB (2^30) space. If their historical use has only grown to ~160GB, it should be fine. If they start using too much, they'll probably need an added HDD.

That's like asking if a whatever-size flat panel TV is big enough. The answer is pretty much always no sadly.

a second issue is that the second option means two drive letters, which really does make teaching non tech people a hassle as they put everything where the computer wants to place it, which is nearly always c drive.

I thought I needed a 256 GB SSD (having used 64 and 128 GB SSD's for boot drives in the past), but on my current 840 Pro 256 GB which is my boot drive, I'm using only 70 GB. That is with the OS and all the applications I use installed to the SSD. I could easily clean out 10 GB of that and there's an additional ~2 GB of temporary files per CCleaner.

You should go with the 256 GB SSD, if you can. Sounds like you can always add a HDD (for data drive purposes) later.

Well, I have a travelling latop with SSD, and a 256GB SSD is more then enough for me. But then, I'm only 82. 🙂
