I can get this stuff throgh school but can't seem to figure out if its a good deal or not.

Heres the link, check it out. http://beefjerky.tamu.edu

I used to buy deer jerky by the backpack-full from a Vietnamese place in Westminster, but can't remember how much I was paying.

That's a good price compared to normal retail. I've paid about that at BigLots, but they don't always have it, or have the style I want.

Edit:
I take that back. I think I was getting 6oz for $5. If that's the case, BigLots was a good bit cheaper.

Round steak is about $2.60 a pound. Figure about a 3/1 ratio for "wet" to "dry" reduction in meat. $1.50 seasoning packet will take care of 5 to 10 pounds of "wet" cuts.

So....

Doing the math on that....it's just short of a 6x markup of what you could make it for in your own oven.

So ask yourself if that's a good deal. :)

That's a ton, but worth it if it's good. I actually just ordered 2 lbs of Big John's today ($15/lb).

It's a little high. The best beef jerky I've ever had is at my local supermarket, they make it and package it up in ~1lb containers. I think it's $22/lb.

$20 /lb for the Vietnamese beef jerky here. Much better than any of the American jerky I have ate.

Well I live essentially on campus, so I guess free shipping. I will give it a try, but you'de think it would be a bit cheaper since it probably has some dumb people's boogers in it.

And buying a live cow to slaughter and make your own meat would be way cheaper than that round steak. Buying meat at a store's a huge rip off.

A place I grew up around sold jerky at something like $12/lb. It was delicious.

It was a no-frills operation where basically the local hunters would sell their excess meat and they would turn it into jerky and pepperoni (the pepperoni was $10/lb).
