I got an estimate, i think it was only for the front 2 tires. not enTIREly sure! hahahh! lol. Just wondering, i know a set of pads is like $35-40. Rotars are $25 how much are calipers? btw its a 96 grandam.

EDIT: turns out it didnt include rotars, Jut brakes and calipers.

1) you don't need to replace calipers.
2) $200 is ok, but I expecting them to use very cheap product.

Iam pretty sure the calipers need replacing. They were squeaking like crazy, i switched the pads, squeaking every now and then(this is about 8 months ago) now the brakes are absolutely horrible, and need changing immediately. Question how long/miles do the avg set of pads last?

depends on the condition of your brakes. Your rotors may be out of spec and have to be turned, or worst case, replaced. Doing your brakes is not a difficult job, just time consuming if by yourself.

depends on your driving style. I seriously doubt you need calipers. probably new rotors and pads. you go everyother time on your rear shoes (assuming you have drums in the rear) that you do for your front breaks. Odds are the person who installed your pads last didn't use brake bequiet on the pads or your rotors are warped or just grooved. (only reason you might replace your calipers is because the pistons are ceramic and broken, or if your pads aren't wearing relitavly even)

I just did my front breaks on my 2002 dakota (@117,500miles) almost all of it was highway miles, checked my rear shoes, they where like new, and I had a good 25% left on my pads. my rotors where eaten pretty deep, so I replaced my pads and rotors for around $90 using the higher quality carbons from napa.

Not a bad deal if cost includes labor considering the brakes will have to be bled.

I would say you probably don't need calipers.

$200 is a fair price but I would add the rotors.

You could do it all yourself in ~1 hour and $100 (calipers, pads and rotors)

squeeky brakes are almost always the rotors. how many miles on these rotors?

go to another shop and get a free break inspection (dealers sometimes charge you 20 bucks to take off your wheel and look at the brake) ask before they elevate your car if it's going to cost money.

if you're lucky and the rotors haven't been turned (re-machined to a flat surface) you can get that done (should get this done professionally) and that should fix much of the squeek problem. Do you feel/hear grinding when you step on the brakes? there's a chance the pads are still good if you don't hear it.

as for the caliper, you can try relubricating the pins, or getting rebuilt ones for cheaper than new ones.

and be careful when you fix your brakes, (and get a haynes/chilton manual)

i didnt bleed my brake line when i changed my pads/rotor on my 93 sentra.

or are you including the calipers?

btw- calipers just squeeze the pads into the rotors. if you sit on a straight surface and just release the brakes, do you go forward? if so, then you probably dont need new calipers. (i'm assuming the car stops ok when you press the brakes. :) )

the brakes are bad. If i press them, i can feel them stalling. Sometimes i press on the brakes to slow down at a red light, and i hear the tires squealing. Also, sometimes i haveta put the car in park at a light, because it will keep drifting forward. Its so bad, im not doubting if anything needs chaning, because 8 months or so ago, the dude slapped on new pads, but said i needed new calipers, and the pads wont last too long as the calipers will sometimes keep them pressed on to the rotars.

you don't bleed disk brakes ;) (unless the calipers really do need replaced)

edit per post above, that could be bad calipers, low/incorrect brake fluid, or a bad master cylinder. for a problem like that, I'd take it to a dealership, they should have special equipment for testing the master cylinder. $200 for the front brakes and calipers isn't bad, but if I where you I'd spend the extra $50-60 for new rotors.

Alrite ty lobado, im gonna buy all new pads/rotars/brakes.

i'd recommend bleeding your brakes before doing anything else (this includes driving) that might fix all your problems.

Go to autozone and check out the prices. He's probably going to use the cheapest possible parts. If the man's going to do your brakes he's got to make at least $50-60 per wheel. Otherwise, what's the point. Tell him to add new rotors and pack the wheel bearings and you'll give him $250.
