Is 2.6Mbps the MAX for Wireless Internet speeds...?

folks, I just set up my wireless Belkin Pre-N Router wich supports MIMO. This is my second wireless MIMO router ( the first one was a D-Link 624M which I returned for the Belkin)

It seems like these routers are great for wired connection download speeds which I am able to reach close to my cable providers max of about 9-10 mbps but as soon as I connect with my wireless laptop which has an Intel 2915ABG wireless card, the max download connection I can achieve is about 2.5 to 2.6mbps from TESTMY.net broadband testing website which is very accurate for testing your speeds in comparision to real world situations.

My question is, is this speed pretty much the max that wireless routers can transmit WLAN data around your wireless network?.....I pretty much have tested this around my entire house including right next to the wireless router and achieve about the same download speeds....also my wireless connection display shows an EXCELLENT SIGNAL strength and a connection speed of 54mbps. So are these download speeds as good as I should expect from a wireless connection to the internet??

What are some of your REAL wireless connection download speeds??

something is wrong.. When transfering files from my hardwired computer to my laptop I typically get 5.5MB/s on an 802.11B network with 128bit WEP. etc. This is with an older Dlink DI-614+ as well as a new Linksys WRT54G.

Maximum speed is roughly 22Mb/s. (bits)

i also get around 2.5mbits MAX (that's if i'm lucky), even though i have a 5mbit internet connection (which my wired computers do test out to show)

Make sure everything is operating in G only mode if your in mixed mode or B mode it will slow down your transfer rates a whole lot.

Try another channel. Default is usually 6.

You're all forgetting overhead for error correction. You never get anywhere near full bandwidth.

Stick with G standard. The mixed B/G standard can significantly reduce speed. A low-powered PC will also have to slow down to decrypt the data.

My wireless Netgear WGT624 router gets the full cable bandwidth (equally) on the wired or wireless connection. My wireless notebook downstairs gets 3.5mbits (downloading from Microsoft for example which can match my download bandwidth capability, for some sites are slower obviously) just like the wired computer next to the router so something isn't right.

thanks for alll your help and feedback everyone....sorry for the stupid question but where exactly can I make sure that i am only running in G mode?....do i set it on the router and the card and where would i change this on the network card??


and yes im running it on channel 6 which was the default channel......does it make a difference to change it ??....thanks

Usually ISP's make up for this by giving more bandwidth then they advertise. So if they advertise 5 mbit, you don't bitch about only getting 4.5mbit. ... etc

Don't have your Belkin but you should be able to change the B/G option in the soft-menu of the Belkin. Try channel 1 or 11 instead of 6.
