is 2.6C Retail HSF quiet?

I'm getting an Antec Sonata case. I was wondering if the retail heatsink/fan that comes with the 2.6C cpu is relatively quiet? Or would it be worth going out and looking for some specialty quiet HSF.

you should be able to oc a little bit, but if u go too high you might want to invest in a slk-900u, or a zalman. as for quiestness, the smartcase fans are good.

^^its great for OC'ing.....some guy on OC forums has his 2.4C at 3.5 with a similar setup as me....but i think lapping the retail HSF, and for greater cooling, lapping the cpu heatspredder would cool it great. but if you're not extreme like that just lap the reatail hsf and use some nanotherm and plug the retail fan directly to the psu

Don't wory about the retail fan and don't listen to anyone trying to tell you otherwise. It's not like the Athlon fans that can't keep the cpu cool at normal temps and you have to spend more cash to get one that works. I will say it again as I have said in may threads. I bought a Zalman CU and my temps only went down by 1-2 degrees so I took it back and got a refund. And yes they are quiet.

I would say that in terms of cooling the stock fan on the 2.6c is more than adequate. However, in terms of noise, it is a bit loud. In comparison to past intel stock heatsink/fans the one that comes on the new c-chips is louder, but not too bad.

The Zalman 7000CU is great for o/c'ing. The retail HSF is loud, especially on o/c where it will max out to keep cool. I dropped 12C from the retail with the Zalman, but I also upgraded my case.

It is very quiet and not as bad as AMD cooler but if you plan to overclock seriously you better get a copper heatsink and if you are looking for quiet one use Zalmans. They are not exactly cheap but they are made much better than your standard Asian imports.

anyone just rip that black "thermal transfer divice" off their retail heatsink and apply normal compound?

i mean, that black strip is designed to transfer heat right? If you don't overclock, is it safe to just stick that retail heatsink from the box right over your cpu and onto the motherboard?

Definitely want to keep the tape if no o/c. 3 year warranty and all that.

I plan on taking the retail HSF from my 2.4C, lapping it, and using ASC to try and hit 3.0ghz. From what I've read it sounds very possible. People REALLY overstate keeping these 800FSB Intel CPUs cool compared to what Intel says it's max temps are...

The stock HSF with my P4 2.8c was very annoying, it gives a dull buzzing sound that I couldn't stand. This zalman 7000cu is totally quiet and cools well. On cool nights at 3.1ghz, my system was running temps of 39c Full crank, 31.7C idle and the room tempature was 26.4c. I run a modded Antec 1000amg case. I love my Zalman :)

The stock fan is adequate for cooling, but it IS noisy, by my standards. I use a Lian Li PC68 and the stock intel CPU cooler is LOUDER than....EVERYTHING ELSE! Only my "cap'n crunch" Maxtor SATA drives can make more noise :)

The Zalman cnps7000 is the best cooler I've found that provides good cooling AND is quiet. You can barely hear it at the lowest speed, and it's only slightly louder at the highest speed. If you're worried about weight, the Al-Cu version cools pretty much the same I hear.

Nice case btw (the Antec Sonata). I built a PC for school for my brother and I used that case. Very Quiet.
