Is 1Gb of RAM worth it?

Just wondering... do you think 1 Gb of RAM is worth an extra $100 over 512, or does improving the speed matter more? This is going to be a gaming machine.

Generally anything over 512MB is a waste except for specialized apps like video editing.

That USED to be true, many new games however use lots of memory. Far Cry and UT 2004 to name two. If you are going to game and you want to play the newest games with high resolution and detailed textures, go for 1GB.

IT depends on the cost and whether you have the money
and like the others above said, what apps you will be using.

For $100, I would say no unless you do video/picture editing or ridiculous multitasking in XP, but if something like 50 fps instead of 60 in BF1942 is going to bother the hell out of you, then you should probably spring for it

I went from 256 to 768 for $65, then got an outstanding deal on another 512 for $20 and sold off my 256 stick to go dual channel. If you have high end RAM like OCZ 4000 gold or something than my scenario will never happen to you, but if you're satisfied with brand name PC2700 or PC3200 you can likely get a deal on 512 for lots less than $100

I'd say yes. Recent games with really large levels (ie. Far Cry, UT2004, Battlefield series, SpellForce, etc..) have convinced me that you really need more than 512mb. 768mb would be enough, but if you're upgrading, you might as well round it up to 1gig and save yourself the time of having to upgrade later again. User modded games tend to use up a lot of memory as well.

Yes, it's very worth it. My system is much more responsive with 1GB than with 512MB. Games also run a lot better as well. FarCry and NFS:U to name a couple.

Yeah, I'm liking the gig I have. Plus, Longhorn will probably gobble RAM faster than an expensive prostitute, so it's worth having.

If you monitor your swapfile usage and find that you're occasionally hitting swap with 512M, go for the 1G.

Yes, I found that 1Gig makes everything run smoother, not just games.
A faster processor wouldn't have helped much, but the ram did the trick.

It really does depend on what you're doing. If you're a gamer, then yes. I recently went from 512MB to 1GB. The day I got BFV, I installed it and it ran pretty well, but there was swapping going on....and it was a bit jerky.

Kingston was having a sale on their PC2700, so I bought 1GB (2x512MB) for $140. Now, BFV runs SO smoothly....as does Farcry. Game coming out this year *will* run better with 1GB of RAM, and its not that expensive anymore.

If you're doing some video editing (I do in Studio 8), then its also great to have. I say go for it.

FYI - HL2 and D3 come out this year too, might as well if you can afford it :p

There are a *TON* of titles that can take advantage of 1GB+ of memory.

Any new MMORPG.
All new FPS's
And many new other titles.

If you play games, use graphics packages and/or heavily multitask then it's worth it.
