I am trying to get broadband...the closes dsl provider is like 13 thousand feet away from my house...to be qualify you need to be at least 18k feet...so is it still worth the 39.99/month for up to 1.5mbps ?

YESYESYESYES!! however, you mentioned that the closest dsl provider is 13k feet from your house, however the distance to the isp doesnt matter at all. its the distance to the dslam (central office) that matters.

Try to find out what the speed of your connection (especially the download speed, for surfing) will be. Sometimes the provider can guarantee a speed, and if it is faster than 50K, or whatever, then it may be worth it to you. I would think that they would not offer the service if it is not beneficial, but maybe I'm wrong. If you haven't already, go to your phone company's website and check out whether DSL is available to see if they give a speed.

DSL delivery in reality can be more problematic than cable, although the constant speed is nice. I would recommend that you get DSL directly from the telephone company rather than a third party. This is because there seem to be more problems with DSL as it expands (maybe too rapidly), and it may be better to reduce the number of separate companies involved in providing the service.

For me the cost of DSL @ $40/mo. was cheaper than the cost of a dial-up ISP plus a dedicated PC phone line.

Better find out realistically how much bandwidth you will actually get. Odd are you will NOT get 1.5Mbps at that distance. I would also do some research on the ISP that's offering the service. True the distance you are from the CO decides the limit on your bandwidth, but the ISP is the one providing the bandwidth and a lot of them can't really do it.

Over 86 ISPs went out of business last year because they oversold their bandwidth at rediculously low prices (many times below cost). Definitely do your homework.

Considering how far your are in the distance loop I would recommend Cable. You would have a much better chance at higher bandwidth considering your current situation.

www.dslreports.com will tell you everything you need to know about DSL. Distance etc etc. By just going with your telco surely does not mean you will get better DSL. Usually they are worse. You will find plenty of reviews on that site.

The worst performance with DSL is going to be better than the best performance of a 56K analog connection. Even if for some reason, at some point, are only getting 56K DSL, it's digital. 56K digital is always going to beat out 56K analog.

it's a question of of if it's worth it or not. for me, i'm 16.7k away, nice eh? No way i'm payin $90/mo for 144 IDSL. SDSL is available, but it just goes up in price from there. What type of dsl is that $39/mo? Like Nastimus suggested, take a spin on dslreports.

Be wary with the DSLReports CO distance tool. It reports that I'm 17500 ft away from my CO, but my connection is awesome and going strong. So my guess is Bellsouth built some remote DSLAMs closer to my house.
