Is 10Mbps enough for 2 pc online gaming?

I dread trying to pull RJ45 cable from the second floor to the basement. I'm considering the networking option that sends data via the telephone jack.

I want to play Counterstrike with my brother via a shared cable connection. Is 10mbps sufficient? I know 100mbps is better for transferring large files in a LAN, but we don't need that--just online gaming.

I could be wrong, but I think the telephone line networking thingy is only 1Mbit, not 10Mbit. If that is the case, that could be problematic for gaming if you have any collision or packet loss at all.

10Mbits.... hmm, it will run good, but 100 is always better then 10, but 10 should be fine. just go with the cabling, its not that hard, the hardest part is figuring out how long you need. make sure you get CAT5e cable though

1 Mbit is perfectly fine for 2 people via online gaming. However HomePNA 2.0 is 10 Mbit anyway.

10bT will be just fine. That cable modem is only using 10bT anyway. But I am not sure how those phoneline kits do.

Eug,

I was thinking of the Diamond HomeFree cards. The RJ11's on them are only 1Mbit. I didn't even know there was another option out there.

just puch a whole in the wall and run cable down..make it look pro and your parents will not kill you when they see it done. put it behind the walls and buy some face plates...worst comes to worse run the cable and paint it the color of the walls. i did that and ran some orange cable painted white with white duct tape along the celing..don't even know it's there.

Yeah, the old version of the Diamond HomeFree is HomePNA 1 (1 Mbps). The current versions of everything (incl. Diamond HomeFree) are HomePNA 2 (10 Mbps). (HomePNA 1 actually means 1 Mbps, but HomePNA 2 is really around 7 Mbps supposedly.)

I use the Netgear Ethernet to HomePNA Bridge for my laptop, with a Linksys Ethernet/HomePNA PC Card.

If you have a closet above a closet then run it there. Take your time and be neat nad no one will get annoyed.

If you can run the cable then do it. And always run 2 at once.

Good luck

<< Try here. Cheap!! >>

That's the 1 Mbps stuff. While it's cheap, the 10 Mbps is only slightly more expensive now. If you go home phoneline networking, go only with 10 Mbps. While 1 Mbps is fine for online gaming, it's useless for just about everything else. But of course, if you can run CAT-5e, that would be the best.

EDIT:

OK I retract my statement. $12.50 for a 2 PCI card kit!?!?!? Only 1 Mbps, but there ain't no way you're gonna get the 10 Mbps stuff for anywhere near that cheap. Hmmm...

I've posted this as a hot deal.

1Mbps is fine for any game that is written to work over the Internet. Even the HPNA 1.0 is better than most cable modem connections and once you factor in any amount of Internet traffic....
