Is $100-130 Really worth it to replace AMD XP 3200+ & A7N8X Deluxe?

Are you saying that computer parts get cheaper after they have been on the market for a while?

Depends on what you are using the PC for , if its just for internet use and light office work then dont bother spending any more than you have to because the difference wont be much.


I have an Athlon XP 2100+ machine OCed a tad bit and it peforms just as good if not a tad faster for basic duty stuff than my P4 3ghz machine ...for games and heavier apps the P4 kills the 2100+ though.


That being said , holding on is a good idea too.

Basically I wont upgrade until the 4000+ part is @ $200 or so , so maybe a year or less if I am lucky.
I am sure the 3500+ will at least get down to $200 within 6 months or less and IMO its the 3500+ level on up where performance seems to really take off up and over the P4s.



 
If you're a gamer, spend what money you have on a new vid card. Best bang-for-the-buck upgrade. Besides 754 is a dead end. Future upgrades limited.

I'll vote when you post what you plan to be doing. If you play games and have a decent enough video card then yeah get an A64, if not don't bother.

Also do you OC now? If not... try it?
 
In your case you'd benefit more if you got something like 6800GT (but the prices on them are more than $130, even if you sell 9700 it wont be enough).

You could wait to upgrade until Nforce 4 settles down and goes through some chipset revisions, pcie cards become more available and prices come down. Then in Spring when new cards come out you might be able to pick up 2 6800GT SLI for $250 a piece on that nforce 4 mobo and a cheaper A64.

It all depends how much are you in need of an upgrade. If it's for gaming and you feel your gaming is choppy, you can just get a new videocard. If it's for other work, and you need cpu speed, then sure A64 would be beneficial.

Right now A64 3200+ 90nm is about $180 and 939 mobo around $120. Those should overclock to 2.4 giving you roughly 3800+ performance. I guess the general rule of thumb is, if you are willing to wait (means it's not burning on a pan for you yet so you don't really need it yet), then wait as long as you can since prices will come down and performance will increase. I guess if you were asking this question, then you don't really need it just yet, since you would have already acquired it, no?
 
The A64 3000+ don't run any faster than the Athlon 3200+. It has some other advantages like 64-bit computing (no use if u are using windows). It is not worth an upgrade at all right now.
