actually, I go to school in Dallas and I live in southern california...

they told us in southern california we were too far from a CO for DSL (we live in the boonies in Newport Coast)...so we HAD to stick with cable...at times, it even chokes to like a 14.4 modem...I mean, yahoo page SLOWLY and painfully comes up...

here in australia bigpond cable came out with the insane plan of capping cable @ 400kbps!!!

Im currently with optus@home and if i get less than 5Mbps its a bad day. My current D/L record would be about 7Mbps. Im currently limited more by comp speed (I have a k6-2 400) than cable speed. Whats the point of paying for broadband if your only getting ~ 1Mbps.

Wow I have become jaded. Been a while since I got a 14.4Kbps modem free cause the power supply was patched togethor with duct tape. :)

Cable has one downside though. The crappy upload speeds.

128Kbps just isn't enough.

dude... am i a sucker for paying $40 for my 640k dsl service from verizon?
i'm so jealous of you guys telling me stories of 5mbps and stuff.

even with my 640k...
i'd say my average top speed for d/l'ing is around 70-80 kbps.

should i change my service?

Im paying $ 40 US for 5-7Mbps.

Your paying same for 640Kbps.

edit- are you sure its 70-80 Kbps? and not 70-80 KBps?

1.5 down for DSL is pretty good, its about what I'm getting now. DSL is a pretty good deal, but cable *can* be better, depending on where you are.

My cable system is fine for d/l's, but playing online FPS games, my ping would spike too much.

If you live in a huge metro area its very likely you would have slower speeds than DSL. I have the choice of DSL, Cable or Wireless. I took 1-1.5Mbps DSL, dont even want to see what the cable is like in the greater Dallas area. Ah well better than 42k. SWB pissed me off, I called them last week, was on hold for over a hour, talked to 7 different people and they said they'ed have someone call me back THIS WEEK to give me the details on DSL and take my order, so... I'm glad I had several options cause they never bothered calling back. Though I still dont have it grrr. Anyday now(or so Ive been told several times).
