Is 1 = 0.9999......

couldn't this be done with any number, like 0.3333... = 1? seems like something is off here.

x = 0.3333...
10x = 3.3333...
10x - x = 3.3333... - 0.3333...
3x = 3
x = 1

this is probably a repost but in about 7 years i'll be done reading the other posts here.

do infinite numbers have a rate of expansion or are they all assumed to have all the "..." at the exact same time? i don't like math.

By the way, can we agree that the number 0.999..., which really represents an infinite sum (of 9/10^n), converges to 1? Whether or not this is equal to 1 requires a rigorous definition of equality.

Nope. The whole reason this stupid debate goes on is that madrat insists on a different definition of infinity then everyone in mathematics uses, hense what he means by "infinite sum" is probably not what you mean. We've been through this part of the debate before :frown:

Your math errors start following the bolded line. It should read like this:
x = 0.3333...
10x = 3.3333...
10x - x = 3.3333... - 0.3333...
9x = 3
x = 1/3

10x-x = 9x != 3x

This thread keeps going, and going and going...

0.9999... != 1.

LOOK! They look NOTHING alike therefore they must not be equal.

I agree when I type 0.9999... = 1 into my TI-89 I get a syntex error so they can't be equal.

Like all social issues of our time, there will never be a concensus here at ATOT. The "0.9999.. != 1" are right!

Wow, almost 2000 posts in this thread!

And... the mathematicians are smart enough to know that .9999.... does indeed equal exactly 1.

But, the mathematicians lack the other sort of intelligence to realize that the rest of the people are, mathematically speaking, too stupid or ignorant to accept the fact. Or, maybe they do realize it, but have that "never give up" attitude.

I really hope there's a Heaven. And, when I see St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, I hope he says, "before you get into Heaven, you must answer one question correctly: does .9999... = 1?" Because, you see, I already have to put up with mathematically challenged people for the rest of my life on earth. To spend the rest of eternity with them certainly wouldn't be heaven, it'd be the other place! 😀

heh heh 🙂 if that isn't a set-up for some witty comebacks...
(but, if you truly had any wits, you'd realize .999... = 1)

I'd be interested in reading what you (or anybody who believes 1 != .999...) think 1 - .999... equals then. 🙂

I didn't post that, it was bleeb.

But its been so long, I can't remember what I voted for anyway.

anyway, 3 more posts til 2k.
