Don't require a signature (Delivery Confirmation?). You might never get confirmation. Tried that last year.

xxxxxx:

In response to your request dated 11/19/2007, we regret to inform you that we were unable to
locate any delivery information in our records regarding your item number 7007 1490 0000

Will you have a copy of the postmark when IRS mailed you a letter saying you didn't file your taxes on time?

I don't really care about the stuff inside, its all inside someone's computer somewhere. Just need some sort of proof that I filed my taxes before the deadline.

unless you are mailing a payment and owe money, they won't do anything if it is late
so i guess i could see something to prove the postmark if you owe money and are sending a check

For people cutting it close to the deadline, certified mail is the way to go....solely for the purpose of having documented proof of when it was mailed in. Now the return receipt is an extra and I don't usually go with it as it's pricey.

Mail it certified. The IRS released a revenue procedure addressing this issue that states what it will accept (from a private delivery service or USPS) to establish timely filing, but I don't have it handy, got boxed up with other work stuff when I moved cubes last year.

It's a shame they screwed up internet filing. Once upon a time it was done directly through the irs website for free. Then the following year they just provided links to a billion shady websites that charge to handle the e-filing. I've used regular first class mail ever since.

I've always mailed regular USPS first class mail and have never had a problem.
